Downers cause a massive tolerance once you use them enough. I don’t doubt Ozzy was taking a dose high enough to knock out 100 people. I’ve had problems with downers in my life and it got to a point where I was taking 100 times the recommended dose and I was still coherent enough to follow my regular schedule.

My old band had a gig to play Friday and Saturday night at a festival in Cincinnati one weekend. After the Friday gig we hung out with Lonnie Mack , a great guitar player/ singer who was quite a bit older than any of us. Lonnie had a reputation for having an iron constitution when it came to getting the buzz on. We were sitting on his bus and it got to be about 6am and and nobody was in a state to sleep. One of the guy in LMs band offered me some kind of horse pill because I intended to to sleep a little before the Sat night gig. Last thing I recall is being dragged out of my room and told we had to be on in an hour and a half. I was still seeing double when we got onstage and my head seemed to weigh 1000 lbs. I felt weird for days afterwards and I still don't know what that pill was.
