Alabama fan here and I think this is a great hire for UCF. Malzahn can coach offense for sure. The problem for UCF is if he wins there power five teams are going to come after him. That's the drawback to not being a destination program.

Being a conduit to a P5 head coaching job is a not a bad spot to be for a G5 program. UCF has done well since hiring George O'Leary 16 years ago which was a stoke of luck since he was black-listed from any school with name recognition. Since O'Leary was let go UCF has been a popular destination to build your coaching resume and hiring an ex-SEC coach with a winning record and national championship games on his resume only helps that, especially when you KNOW there were P5 teams that would be happy to have him as head coach. It is an uncomfortable spot to be in but UCF has played its cards very well considering their situation being a newer program in a less-respected conference with a permanently weaker schedule than the rest of the top 25 year after year. Eventually UCF's strategy will pay off and they will get into a P5 conference but you've got to earn your place through consistently good coaching hires and winning seasons.

Gus can’t coach offense. He’s always been carried by his players. His offensive scheme is outdated. He’s to run happy, hence why Auburn’s been a mediocre team the last few years. UCF’s offense will take a dramatic fall unless Gus keeps the same system that Scott Frost implemented.

Come on as an Alabama fan you'd have to agree the kick six was a fluke Gus Malzahn is just a mediocre High School football coach I also think he is a crook and he is sneaky he doesn't know how to evaluate talent nor does he know how to develop Talent but he is a Salesman he took Auburn for a ride and laughed all the way to the bank let's be honest he's not that great of an X's and O's kind of guy is red zone offense stinks he'll run UCF in the ground just like he did Auburn

As an Auburn grad and fan, I appreciate the memories Gus gave us. But he failed to develop as a coach who developed his players. Gus always pulled in great recruits, but could never keep them and could never develop a quarterback. The only reason people are so high on him is because of 6 games over 8 years: 2013 UGA game, 2013 Iron Bowl (kick six), 2013 SEC championship, 2017 UGA win, 2017 Iron Bowl win (after which both teams went on to play in the natty), and the 2019 iron bowl. That’s it. Over 8 seasons, that’s all he has to show. Other than that, two measly bowl game wins in 8 years. Gus is the definition of over promising and under delivering on the big picture. I appreciate him as a person and coach, but he just couldn’t get it done.

As an Auburn fan, it's easy to say this on the outside looking in till you see he calls a hb dive up the middle on 3rd & 8. Or 22 Receiver reverses/ bubble screens. The talent we had an Auburn is severely underrated & imo should've won the chip in 2017 if not for the collapse after the iron bowl. But War Eagle & thanks for the memories Gus

UCF fan here. I feel like we have the same exact complaints about Huepel. (Great offensive coordinator but couldn't evolve the offense once everyone else caught on to it and in the end it just became stale). Like literally down to the dive plays on 3rd down and nothing but bible screens mixed in with random shots down the field. But hopefully Malzahn's experience and connections help with building a decent staff and nice recruiting base. Remember Frost took our entire staff so Huepel had to start from scratch with no experience as a head coach. And with Tennessee taking him and our AD we were almost dead in the water. So I don't know if he can give us another "2017" type of season but he was certainly the absolute best outcome and I'm willing to bet he will do better than the trajectory Huepel had us on.

@@Finnissee0122 bro you don’t know what you’re talking about. Kiehl Frazier, Kodi Burns, Jeremy Johnson, Woody Barrett, Malik Willis, Sean White, Jarret Stidham, and Joey Gatewood all have one thing in common: Gus, as a head coach and offensive-minded coach, couldn’t develop them. Auburn under Gus as HC: 3-5 (38%) v Alabama 2-7 (22%) v Georgia 3-5 (38%) v LSU 2-5 (29%) in bowl games 1-4 (25%) in bowl games v major conference teams 0-12 in Baton Rouge, Athens, and Tuscaloosa 39-28 (57%) v SEC opponents 15-17 (47%) v SEC opponents on the road 7-6 (54%) v non-conference power 5 teams 20-27 (41%) when playing ranked teams 8-17 (31%) when playing top 10 teams 27-31 against power 5 teams with a winning record 2 NY6 bow appearances and 0-2 in them 7 straight seasons with 4 or more losses 1st loss to a non-major conference team in 27 years 1st loss to Tennessee in 19 years (20 years at home) 1st loss to South Carolina in 87 years (1933) 1 SEC championship in 8 years 0 playoff appearances 0 national titles 2 first-round NFL draft picks since 2014 both in 2020 (credit: Kevin Steele on defense) No offensive first round picks since 2014 Went 5 seasons without a single first-round pick Lost by a combined 69 points in 4 losses in the 2020 season We beat no ranked teams We beat no teams with a winning record We lost to a team that fired their coach mid season (USCe) We never were in games against Georgia and Alabama, they scored TDs while we kicked field goals We were one play away from losing to Ole Miss and Arkansas There are people old enough to vote who have never experienced a win in Baton Rouge. In 2021, there will be people able to drive who have never experienced an Auburn win in Athens. If this resume doesn’t warrant firing, I don’t know what does. Reminder, Gus was the ~7th highest paid coach in all of college football and still put up the results above. Also, Auburn reeled in several top 10 recruiting classes as well, and Auburn’s highest-rated recruits regularly transferred from the program. The current Auburn recruiting class is ranked 42nd (at the time of Gus’ firing, moved up to 20 due to Harsin and staff’s efforts in less than a month), which shows Gus had already given up on the team.

Auburn has been overly patient with Gus. In his ONLY good season after year 1, we STILL had 4 losses. Gus had all the players to go all the way in 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2019 and couldn’t put it together.

A majority of the Auburn fanbase doesn’t even bother watching the games anymore. Fan, booster, and BOT apathy had set in. It was past time for Gus to go. Fan apathy and the money the university stood to loose if they didn’t make the move is what’s at stake. That amount for that buyout pales in comparison to forking over the cash.
