Lyrics:
Gus is the cat at the theatre door
His name, as I ought to have told you before
Is really Asparagus, but that's such a fuss to pronounce
That we usually call him just Gus

About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

My favorite cat passed away on June 16th, 2020 at the age of 16. His name was Friend, but I called him Boy because he was the only male in the house. He looks just like Mistoffelees since he's a Tuxedo cat, besides his face of course. My mother found him crying for food in the fall of 2008. Another cat came and they both sat outside. I was 4 at the time. We decided to keep Boy with our 3 cats and give the other to my mother's cousin. She named him Star. I believe that Boy and Star were brothers. Well, I'm glad to have kept Boy 'cause he was the most relaxed and loving cat I've ever met. He'd always purr unless he's sleeping and loved his belly to be rubbed. When my door was open, he'd come in and hop on my bed and try to find my face. He liked going under the covers. He was so gorgeous with his shiny coat, wide forehead, big green owl eyes and deep meow. At some point he had a gum disease, so my mom removed most of his teeth. His tongue would occasionally fall out of his mouth if he was relaxed. Then he got a cataract in an eye one day, and another in the other about a month later. (Don't read if sensitive) I open my window for my cats to sit on and look out of. Well I guess Boy really liked it because he wanted to go outside real bad. On June 12th, Boy ran out the door when my mom walked in. She didn't mind because he hung around the house. A cat usually stays within a mile of your house. Sometime later, he was on the back porch. That was the last we heard from him in 3 days. It was quite hot that day. In the meantime, my mom looked around the neighborhood in case anyone had him. - - - Someone up the street said the lady across the way took in cats. That was a relief because there were coyotes (In the city of all things) and the guy 2 doors over had an illegal Pitbull, had guns, was aggressive, likely a drug seller, and exclaimed that the Pitbull kills cats. The old lady was a bit rude to my mother when she described Boy and shoo'd her away. Later that night, mom shouted his name and she could've sworn she heard Boy cry in that lady's house. Which gave me hope cause I would've killed the druggie's Pitbull or exterminated every coyote. - - - So on June 14th, a local shelter called and said that a couple dropped off Boy. The couple found him beside a rural street not less than a mile from my house and took him in. We couldn't get him until the next day. Poor old boy was so thin and shook in the cage they put him in. I immediately opened it up and carried him to the car. It was like carrying nothing. He quivered and barely mewed. He just looked out the window. When we got home, he wouldn't eat or drink until later that night when he took licks at the water bowl. He slept with me that night, stretched out and happy. He didn't even purr. The next day, my mom had to take him to the vet. I prayed for the best and didn't wish to go with her in case for the worst. My last goodbye to Boy was head pets and a nuzzle on the nose. Then I slept. Mom came back with Boy in a box. The doc said he was to far gone to bring back... They also said that he had puncture wounds _as if a coyote dragged him away._ I tried not to cry, but Boy was my only friend. He was there for me when nobody else cared. He loved me unlike anyone I've known. I wept that night. Star died a couple months before Boy did. He's currently buried on the side of our house. I promise I'm gonna take him and the 2 other dead cats with us. 2020 took a lot of things from people, I had nothing to lose except him. I already miss you Boy, my sweet Friend. I hope you and you brother are together at last.

Sandra Davis has a point... and I think Gus is the solid second choice after Griz. But also think of what the end message of the show would be if Gus was chosen over Griz. Gus has had a full life... Grizabella (according to another actress's behind the scenes video) left the tribe to be with Macavity and then he left her for another cat, and when she tried to go back to the tribe they rejected her... we all know someone who's made a mistake and fallen somehow and the moment of compassion at the end of Jemima singing with Griz first and Victoria touching her first speaks volumes: two of the youngest (both kittens) being the first to reach out to a former family member who's old and remorseful and only wants to be forgiven and accepted again... And I think it's also very telling that (although they look to Deuteronomy for approval) the first cats in the tribe to reach out and forgive and accept Griz are two young female cats. Not saying that poor old Gus with his palsy didn't deserve to go to the Heavyside Layer... Just saying that the ending has meaning. But I still cry when I listen to this song.

Gus is so sweet. I just want to wrap him in a blanket and hold him to stop his poor hands from trembling. And Jellylorum is so gentle with him. You can tell she cares. This is one of the few roles in the new movie that I felt was done well. Ian McKellan was a good Gus. Not quite as fragile, but the dignity was still there.

Head canon: Gus married Grizabella and had Jellylorum. Jellylorum has two daughters, Demeter and Bombalurina. One of demeter’s daughters is Jemima. That’s why Jemima’s part in “moment of happiness” leads to this song; Gus is inspired by his great granddaughter’s song which convinces him to relive his moment of happiness.

Gus is the cat at the theatre door His name, as I ought to have told you before Is really Asparagus, but that's a fuss to pronounce That we usually call him just Gus His coat's very shabby, he's thin as a rake And he suffers from palsy that makes his paw shake For he was in his youth quite the smartest of cats But no longer a terror to mice or to rats For he isn't the cat that he was in his prime Though his name was quite famous, he says, in his time And whenever he joins his friends at their club (Which takes place at the back of the neighbouring pub) He loves to regale them, if someone else pays With anecdotes drawn from his palmiest days For he once was a star of the highest degree He has acted with Irving, he's acted with Tree And he likes to relate his success on the halls Where the gallery once gave him seven cat calls But his grandest creation as he loves to tell Was Firefrorefiddle, the fiend of the fell Sir John I have played in my time every possible part And I used to know seventy speeches by heart I'd extemporize backchat, I knew how to gag And I knew how to let the cat out of the bag I knew how to act with my back and my tail With an hour of rehearsal, I never could fail I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts Whether I took the lead, or in character parts I have sat by the bedside of poor little Nell When the curfew was rung then I swung on the bell In the pantomime season, I never fell flat And I once understudied Dick Whittington's cat But my grandest creation, as history will tell was Firefrorefiddle, the fiend of the fell Sarah Then, if someone will give him a toothful of gin He will tell how he once played a part in East Lynne At a Shakespeare performance he once walked on pat When some actor suggested the need for a cat Sir John And I say now these kittens, they do not get trained As we did in the days when Victoria reigned They never get drilled in a regular troupe And they think they are smart just to jump through a hoop Sarah And he says as he scratches himself with his claws Sir John Well the theatre is certainly not what is was These modern productions are all very well But there's nothing to equal from what I hear tell That moment of mystery when I made history As Firefrorefiddle, the fiend of the fell

Having Gus sing more of his own song is interesting. One of the saddest things about this song for me is how Gus isn't even allowed to tell his own story the whole time. If it weren't for everything else about the 2019 movie, I'd be intrigued to see an interpretation where Gus sings more.

Firefrorefiddle is one of the most meaningless characters in Cats with absolutely no relevance or backstory from TS Elliot, or mythology what so ever, yet Andrew Lloyd Webber still managed to portray this character in such an amazing way he's one of my absolute favorites. The moment in part 2 of this song, where Firefrorefiddle reaches out to Gus, then backs away, is THE best moment in the play, IMO. The real tearjearking moment. So sick of Memory, I know it's a showstopper and rightly so, but give it a rest--this song, and Gus seeing Firefrorefiddle retreating into the shadows, is the part that always, always makes me cry. Bravo! Who played Firefrorefiddle here? Wish this bit got more love.
