I would LOVE to read that screenplay. I love Jeremy Blake's work and know of their tragic story... That sounds amazing. Fantastic interview. Didn't he claim in his suicide note that Scientology was stalking and harassing him and his wife (ever since he had worked with Beck on the 'Sea Change' artwork)? I remember his fantastic "scorpitones" interludes from Punchdrunk Love.

Exactly what Gus said about making some X-rated into an R, is exactly why I appreciate the challenge of good Pg-13 movies, that could've or should've been an R. Think The Dark Knight or The Ring

He's made some great movies, but Jesus, he's a hard interview to listen to. I'd prefer to just hear Ellis talk about his films.

Does Van Sant have some kind of a cognitive disorder or disease? Because I'd never want to mock him if he does. But if not, if this is just the way he talks...wtF? Have I never heard him interviewed before? This is painful. Imagine this were any other walk of life, this man being an accountant or teacher or whatever. You would be like, what is WRONG with this person? I almost feel like it's an affectation. Oh, I'm so deep and artsy, I'm not concerned with mundane things like getting through a sentence without a dozen umms. Very annoying. Again, if he has some kind of legitimate issue, I apologize. I think, however, that this is just how he is. Wtf. Learn how to talk, dude.

@@biocykle Do you just pick random sentences from paragraphs and argue against them, regardless what effect the surrounding words may have had on the meaning? You missed the sentence directly before the one you're taking me to task for. If someone were to talk like that on PURPOSE, yes, I feel a reasonable assumption would be they are pretentious. I clearly say I'm not sure if that's what's going on. I mean, it was a year ago and I have no intention of enduring it again, but from what I remember he really sounded like there's something wrong with him. Mumbling, barely answering. Again, what other walk of life could you get away with that? (Well, these days, everyone tip-toeing not to be "insensitive," you could probably be a mumbling, stuttering auctioneer...but prior to, say, these last few years.) Imagine you work at a bank and THIS guy comes in for an interview. Yeah, fuck it, I'll admit what I really think: he IS doing it on purpose. The guy is together enough to develop major motion pictures and direct them, he doesn't HAVE to sound like a damaged, homeless vet. Open your damn mouth and speak clearly when someone asks you a question. You CHOSE to be interviewed. It's not like Ellis is shoving a microphone in his face when the dude takes his trash out.

@@jfal4782 I don't even remember this, but rereading the conversation, I don't think I expressed any annoyance until some dummy who couldn't understand what I was saying decided to chime in. Kind of like you just did. 😇 Edit: and I love the move of, whenever someone has an opinion you don't like, going "oh, you're all BOTHERED" like that's an actual point. Yes, I'm sure you're a peaceful Zen master 24/7, but some of us have opinions on things. (I honestly don't even remember how Gus talks in this, but I trust myself. My description of it, it sounds obnoxious.)
