Elephant is one of the most riveting films I have ever seen. So happy Diane Keaton was involved--she knows EVERYBODY, and made it possible for this movie to be made.

Elephant is a great movie, very somber and the pacing is amazing. I like that the ending leaves you with more questions than answers because that reflects the reality of mass shootings. No one ever gets the answers they are looking for.

Kittenmittens yes and the constant invocation of the sky provides a level of reality that’s always present beyond the physical. It felt that the more the sky appeared the less I was concerned with the tragedy. A brilliant paradox.

I agree this was an excellent movie, but I think it could have been even better if van sant had spent more time delving into the backgrounds of the various characters. I, for one, wouldn't have minded if the film had been 30 to 45 minutes longer, allowing us to have a more in-depth look at these people.

Thanks for the information! I believe the Wikipedia entry for the newer film says the title is based on the eastern story of different people touching an elephant believing it to be different objects and the entry for the older film says the title is from “the elephant in the room”. Much confusion.

@ravenmcchesney84852 жыл бұрын
To me the shower scene showed the inexperience of the shooters. They said they hadn’t kissed anyone before, which shows that they were still so young when they made that decision. It also could represent the repressed sexual aggression they had, a lot of studies show that young males that are involuntarily celibate can show signs of aggression. I didn’t feel they were truly gay but more wanting to express a side of them that they felt they couldn’t share with anyone but each other- which also shows the toxic bond the two share (not toxic because of that scene but toxic in their shared hatred of the world)
@lolah38382 жыл бұрын
It was odd to hear Keaton & Van Sant discuss the pacing, style and title of this film without mentioning the direct inspiration for it - Clarke's TV program of the same name. These concepts weren't original to Van Sant's vision for his film. He expanded on some things but those are the things that don't work. I love a lot of his films but this is not one of them.

Imagine not mentioning the original 1989 'Elephant', Alan Clarke's last film and produced by Danny Boyle of 'Trainspotting' fame. GVS has lifted the atmosphere/feeling of the original, mainly by ripping off a ton of shots etc, but neither of these 2 have the decency to mention (imo) the far better original. GVS was always a hack, this proves he's a common thief.

@Lisa-vc3dc Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting question and I never asked myself whether they were gay or not, I think it's probably a question of doing it and then dying, findind arousal in the pain they're going through and going to inflict and finally feeling alive and considered? They never got the time to figure out who they were, they were dominated by their hatred. They never got the chance to be heard, and also never wanted to, so I'd say it's would be something ruled by their instinct? I am probably making no sense
