@@ave5704 I just did my interview a few days ago and got hired, they asked me why I wanted to work at Barnes and noble, what being a bookseller means to me, why I chose Barnes and Noble, what books I’m reading now, the last book I read, a book that means a lot to me and why. They gave me a scenario: if you’re doing a task (shelving books for example) and a customer looks confused, how would you decide what to work on at that time? If they ask this, just say you’d help the customer first, because you can get back to the books after. They also asked what genre of books I’d put on display if I had the option, and what genres of books I read the most. Hope this helps!

@@xluckxanddolphx8508 I thought that too but register is actually really easy try not to worry about it :) youd almost definitely have to do register sometimes. I’m bad at math and it’s easy, most people use card so u won’t have to count cash that much anyway. We literally have someone with dyscalcula (hopefully I spelled that right, it’s basically math dyslexia) who works register sometimes and she does fine too. Just has to ask coworkers to help her with math occasionally. You’ll feel more confident once you’re there, and have practiced a bit, trust me!

I think it's really interesting to see other people's perspective working at B&N because they can be SO different. I worked there from 2015-2019, started as a bookseller and ended as a Merchandise/Sales & Inventory Manager, and worked between 5-6 different stores (only 2 were my 'home' stores, the rest I covered shifts in sporadically). The only really positive thing about the job that I experienced was the amazing friendships I made with my co-workers 🤷‍♀️

I have worked several part time jobs and Barnes and Noble was by far my fave. I loved working with like minded misfits, and the customers that come in aren’t nearly as dim witted as other retail jobs. Which was refreshing. It was a slower pace, and dare I say relaxing. I got let go because of Covid cuts and just decided to stick with my full time when they called me back for rehire, but I miss it there often.

@@Voixxy I worked anywhere from 8-19 hours a week. But also my case was different. I asked for the lowest amount of hours lol and my manager accommodated me. But according to everyone else, hours fluctuated. I think that’s because B&N doesn’t have the budget say as a place like Kohls, so I noticed hours were frequently cut, even prior to COVID.

@@ariana5244 again, my case was different because I worked full time someplace else. But I only typically worked 4 hours on the week day. Usually 5-close. Which for my store was 9 PM. So it varies. But I did really like the app they used for scheduling though. If any co-workers needed a shift taken, you can essentially “list” it on the app and another co-worker can claim it. I would list mine often and it would be claimed within hours. It was super convenient for those looking for more hours.

Ive applied to a Barnes and Noble in my area, always thought it looked like a fun place to work, I just hope I can get an interview, because I hate working in foods, which is what Im currently doing right now at Wendys. Ill just keep applying every week until B&N gives me an interview. Like I dont even care much about the pay I just want something a bit more chill. Plus I just love the environment of B&N.

@@AtinyElring The job is great so far. I was hired on as temporary for the Christmas season and they decided to keep me on for part time. For orientation, they just showed me what the job entails such as the shelving system, computer system, and the layout of the store. The people that I work with are amazing and job overall is very enjoyable. I won’t sugar coat it, bc It is retail so it’s not all that great all the time because at the end of the day you’re still dealing with people, cash register, taking calls, and assisting people on the floor. If you can get through that then it’s a pretty slow pace job with little stress depending on the time of year.

Yes! The hours are manageable but it definitely takes some time management to make sure you do your school stuff in time cause you’ll be spending some time at work, time that you had free otherwise! Sleep schedule may get messed up lmao

I’ve been applying to Barnes & Noble since I was 15 and I literally just got hired yesterday (I’m 23 now!) I honestly just think that timing is the key. This time I was super adamant about checking job postings as soon as they went up and being the first to apply with a specialized resume and cover letter. I’ve had so many jobs over the years and B&N by far had the most selective interviewing process (I did a phone interview and then two in person interviews). I’m sure you’re plenty qualified, persistence and timing just might be the key!! I know a lot of stores are hiring/going to be hiring since the holiday season is coming up so you might have even better luck applying now/very soon. wishing you the best of luck! 🤞

The interview went well, I don’t really remember the exact questions that were asked but pretty much what they were asking were question’s like how would handle a situation?, how would you welcome a customer?, when was a time that you dealt with a problem and how did you handle it/ solve it?. Pretty much just questions about handling problems/ focusing on a persons needs. It’s okay if you don’t have any customer experience!! You can always say how you handled a problem/ situation with a person like at school or any given place that you helped out someone :). They didn’t ask any questions about books either since the position was barista but if you do have any knowledge with books that should definitely help you out! Good luck

it truly depends on the store! some don't give out many hours and probably will save their hours for employees that have been there longer or managers. I guess the general rule is, the busier the store the more hours they'd give out :) glad I could help!!

Why do I feel like my store is so chaotic compared to yours? I currently work at one, but last time we did the bookseller recommendation stuff, one manager typed them all out and stuck our names on them! I never read the book I was apparently recommending. Also displays are kinda 50/50, there are ones that we are told to set up by corporate, but other than that we pretty much can do whatever we want as long as we have a theme in mind for them. I work in the kids dept so I've got a little more freedom than the other workers to do what I want (not sure if it's the same with other stores, but only certain workers at mine are thrown in the section). The manager just tells me I can change what I want, as long as it makes sense and looks nice. Employee discount has actually changed to 40% off entire store (some exceptions still), but it does include cafe, so no more 50% there.

it depends on each store's availability and need! when I was in high school, they gave me hours after school. there was also a high school teacher who worked there only on the weekends. so, hopefully you can find a store that can accommodate those hours for you :)
