you can find similar instrument call Rabab/rebab or rababa in all over the middle east, some have 1 string, some have 2 some have 3. You can even find it in Malaysia and Indonesia brought there by Arabs. This instrument is ancient and usually accompanied with poem singing in all over these country. Its fascinating that the same instrument can be found all over the middle world. Amazing. All the sound are same like this.

The gusle were part of the nomadic hrse cultures of the steppes since the begining of history. Scythians, Sarmatians and Mongols all had the same instrument design. Serbs were part of that culture as Sarmatian tribe...They brought the instrument to the Balkans. There they used it to record their history and stories. With Alexander the Great, the instrument was spread into Asia, and then again after Ottomans conquered Serbia, it spread with the Arabs/Turks who adopted it. The instrument was played by Serbs in the Ottoman court. The instrument is NOT meant to be enjoyed musically, but to 'give life' to the story. It is part of Unesco Intangible World Heritage of Servian Culture. Over 3000 years old.

It most likely originated in what is now Northern Albania and Southern Montenegro, and then of course spread to Southern Serbia many hundreds of years ago. Montenegrin culture is heavily influenced by Albanian culture, and Albanian heavily by Montenegrin also. People do not want to accept this, but we are much more culturally and ethnically related than we would like to admit. This is literally just a type of lyre and is now so deeply ingrained into South Slavic cultures that it is called the native Slavic term for a string instrument, which has cognates in Polish gęśle, Czech housle, Slovak husle and Eastern Slavic гусли. Cultures evolve and exchange elements all the time. Sometimes to the point of it being impossible to conclude who did it first and who followed. However this instrument is for the most part just an Islamic influence over the region so you're all wrong but ultimately it does not fucking matter. Move on
