Márquez: Danzón No. 2 is a vibrant and colorful orchestral piece that reflects the dance style of danzón, which originated in Cuba and became popular in Mexico. The piece was composed by the Mexican composer Arturo Márquez in 1994, and was commissioned by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. It was premiered by the Orchestra Filarmonica de la UNAM under the direction of Francisco Savín. The piece is written for full orchestra, and features solos for clarinet, oboe, piano, violin, double bass, French horn, trumpet, flute and piccolo. The piece has a rhythmic and melodic interest that is maintained through the use of varying accents and tempo. The piece is divided into four sections, each with a different character and mood. The first section is a slow introduction that sets the scene with a mysterious and nostalgic atmosphere. The clarinet plays a lyrical melody over a soft accompaniment by the strings and the piano. ¡Gracias por la recomendación de escuchar la versión del Danzón Nº 2 de NEOJIBA - Orquestra Juvenil da Bahia - Danzón nº 2 (Realização: IDSM/Governo da Bahia/SJDHDS). Definitivamente, es una ejecución magistral impregnada del realismo mágico que recorre América Latina. Mientras residí en Puerto Rico, tuve la oportunidad de adquirir una Edición de Oro de Danzones de México y fue una experiencia musical increíble, pero más lo fue después estar en Cuernavaca y en el Parque junto al Mercado de Artesanías de la Ciudadela en la CDMX y ver la ejecución de las parejas que se reúnen los domingos a bailar el danzón. Y aunque en Puerto Rico, bailamos el danzón de forma diferente un poco más impregnados de la ejecución Bahiana, fue un deleite ver la majestuosidad que dan los danzantes mexicanos y su forma de ejecutar el danzón. La ejecución de Neojiba da aires nuevos al danzón, inclusive un poco más al estilo quizás caribeño que nos define a los Puertorriqueñ@s, sin embargo, no puedo negar que la ejecución de Dudamel, me hizo recordar en todo momento a esas parejas mexicanas que se reúnen con toda esa actitud ceremonial y garbo que impregna las tardes de la Ciudadela y Cuernavaca. Saludos y podría extenderme y decir con un respeto y orgullo enormes: ¡Vivan Bahía, Venezuela y México!

I have been enjoying this recording for many months as it brings a smile to my face each time I hear these rhythms and see these young musicians performing at such a high level. Maestro Dudamel is a pleasure to watch as he is so expressive and gives his musicians positive feedback throughout the performances. A smile goes a long way with most anyone. Because of all this, I was able to attend the New York Philharmonic this past Sunday performing Mahler's 9th Symphony with Gustavo conducting, and he did not disappoint. We had 2nd row seats just to his left, and it was an experience I will always remember. Can't wait to see him there as Music & Artistic Director even though I live in Michigan. Great excuse to visit NYC. Congratulations!!
