Gusty Landings in The J3. I added some High Vis Tape to Stick & Rudder to see Flight Control Input

Even a little wind in the Cub can feel like a lot sometimes. It's always good to just go up and do some pattern work with a little wind to stay proficient. I like to think of my flying like a Duck Under water, lol. While viewing the airplane from the outside it always looks smooth and under control but on the inside I'm constantly moving hands and feet to get the Cub to do what I want.

Joe as a pilot for 50+ years I greatly appreciate ( and learn a lot from ) your outstanding videos. The high visibility tape really helps demonstrate full deflection aileron input at start of your takeoff roll and i plan to show it to my students who often are reluctant to use full inputs. Also it is cool to HEAR your slips! Many thanks.

Joe, I can’t thank you enough for posting your excellent videos. Recently tailwheel endorsed, I’m working on honing my skills until I transition into my completed Hatz. Helps very much to watch your technique. The tape is a great idea.

Perfect timing. Showed this to my old ol'man who soloed in a J-3 in April 1954 and retired NWA on the whale w/25k hrs. You got a lot of "attaboy's", "keepyerstickinner with yer happy feet!!" Cool to see him light up with old memories from back in the olden days.

Joe, this was a cool way to help us visualize your control movements through these maneuvers. Easy to imagine an invisible pilot up front working the stick and dancing on the pedals. John and Martha King would fully approve of this teaching technique.

I would love it if 121 operators would find a way to incentivize their pilots owning their own planes. I think the investment would pay for itself by creating safer pilots. I believe professional pilots who fly in their spare time are more well rounded. Keeps your hands fresh, your aviation mind sharp, and gets you thinking in ways you don’t often when you’re flying commercially. Appreciate the video. Seems like such peaceful flying!

@@tomgillotti funny you say that. The day before this video I got an airplane that had the AutoThrust MEL’d. Felt like I was back in the Cub 😂. Some people only do manual thrust once a year during Sims

@@Bananasssssssss that’s what I’m worried about for myself as I make the transition. In my previous aircraft, we hand fly a lot. I don’t want to let the skills perish.

Nice. I keep a crab until the flare then I use the aileron to keep over the centerline and rudder to keep it straight while flaring to land. Then feed in full aileron into the wind as it slows down. A variation of the slip and crab and kick.

I just did my first ever tailwheel lesson last night in a Fleet 80! It feels very awkward for sure and the controls are so sensitive compared to your average C172 or PA28. It was fun though

definitely takes some getting used to. Do those have heel brakes?
@Fenixx117
@Fenixx117 27 күн бұрын
@@Bananasssssssss thankfully no! Toe brakes and a stick. Also has tail wheel control instead of free castoring. I've done about 18 landings the last two nights. No ground loops yet! Wheel landings and crosswind landing will be soon I love watching your vids both for flying tips and the great cinematography.

If your gonna stay SHARP. develop skills ...Armstrong playing out in DA WIND...is Very MUCH required ....Stick n rudder dancing at its FINEST....remember ANYONE can handle a perfect easy no bumpy day....BUT... "Good Pilot' s "... seek. and ..can't WAIT to go "play in DA wind".. ITS WHAT WE DO!!!!😅
