Several years ago in my small town school, there were sevral tables to get the information for your child's school year....low and behold there was one table, no one was at. I chose a seat and asked about my son's new school year. I was abruptly told, "This table was for Spanish speaking parents only" I said out loud, "I thought we got rid of segregation in the 60's."

My town used to be pretty segregated. Not legally speaking but it was pretty well accepted the darks stayed in their ghettos/bad side of town and everyone else could go to the malls or downtown without fear of being robbed or shot. Then all that changed in the Obama years because the city promoted “diversity” and the results are as expected. No where is safe, the quality of workers have plummeted, and schools have horribly dumbed down their teaching so that race can keep up. But hey now we are “the most diverse city per capita in GA”. So I’m all for segregation if it means our city can go back to normal.

Get teachers who will stick to Reading, writing and math, Social studies, Science, art ,music and allow homeroom Holiday parties like Christmas, Halloween and ect. The majority believed in these holidays. The kids who didn't were not forgotten but they went to another room and still got treats ad fun things to do. Now the majority is punished because a few Kids don't celebrate holidays. Why??? It worked out fine back then. The kids who went into another room did not feel deprived. My wife is a math teacher. Her district pushed this years ago. They wanted the minimum grade to be a 59%... That is what you get when you focus on outcome instead of focusing on learning. The admin was tired of so many kids failing and kids that had a 10% in the first quarter having no chance to pass... So essentially everyone passes and there is no push for learning.... Try teaching algebra 2nd semester to a student that did not learn or retain 1st semester material.

Conceptual math learning will be important from now on, but I swear I was taught a lot of calculation when I was young which is useless. Have the kids use Mathematica & ChatGPT and introduce them to programming, modeling, and physics early on since calculation will be useless after the tech singularity of 2029.

@@aoeu256 Calculation is not as useless as you think. I got my math degree at 30 and taught HS math. Then I went back and got an engineering degree at 40... The students in the engineering program KNEW SO LITTLE CALCULATION and just relied on calculators, that the math concepts required in engineering math ELUDED THEM, they could not see patterns in equations and formulas having fractions, and those patterns would reveal much of the conceptual things we were looking for, like convergence or divergence.

My granddaughter is a senior in high school. Her calculus teacher asked her at the beginning of the school year, to assist her (the teacher) in tutoring those students who are struggling in calculus. The teacher told her "I know you are so busy and are in multiple sports, but you are the best student I have and I just need some help." The teacher also noted that my granddaughter should ask her parents for permission so as to include them in the loop. My son told her, "hey, if she can do it after school and fit it in, it will look great on a resume." The teacher did write a wonderful two page letter for her when applying for scholarships. Our girl got a full ride scholarship...academic, which was EARNED.

The really sad thing is that music classes are a relief for some kids that just don't learn the same way as others. They find their special talent in music and it gives them confidence for other subjects. I say this as a private music instructor but I have friends who were public music school teachers and I hear stories like this all of the time. Music can be a real saving grace for some kids. Well, I did well as a single parent living off my own income! Raised my daughter with supplemental education as I was a substitute teacher. She was always almost 4 yrs ahead her peers in terms of reading by end of Kindergarten level. No boosting. Just sharing what I worked hard at. I try to do all of that in my elementary program. Quite a few of the classroom teachers appreciate it, others have complete disdain and the administration doesn't seem to care at all---they apparently would simply be happy if I just babysat the kids since they could complete a check box to the state for having music classes (even if no music is taught). I once started a long-term sub music position at a school and got called on the carpet for actually teaching music. The principal told me my job was a babysitter so he could have meetings with the teachers during school hours and not have to stay after school. I walked out of that school the same day and never looked back.

My daughter in law taught in a special ed class in a tiny country school for about 10 years, then went on to get her PhD. She is now writing her doctorate which argues that it is time to quit teaching our children to read. Seriously. Her thesis is that today, children can learn the 250 or so words they use routinely will be learned via repetition of sight. Anything above that can be learned via technology! I asked how children would research information outside of what they were learning at school, her answer was that they would be taught what they needed to know! I was taught that we learned to read so we can read to learn! Today, some want our children to be able to learn nothing more than the state wants them to learn and if illiteracy is the means to that end, then the state will end their ability to read!

Our school district has a minimum grade policy where 55 is the lowest grade a student can get on a report card . We’ve also given every school a chrome book. The students just sit in class and play games, and mathematically they can’t fail if they’ve passed one quarter. I have a student who has a zero for two 9- week grading periods and he’s going to pass because he passed the second quarter. The worst part is that I’ll be blamed when he doesn’t know anything next year.

Things are not only no better, but worse in college. I taught in colleges in Georgia for awhile where students not only expected, but came to my office and demanded As just for attending class (not doing any work, mind you, and failing all the tests). And I had administrators try to tell me I had to cater to such demands because they were afraid the parents would sue the school---and justifiably so. I once talked to an administrator who that very day had parents come in and threaten (by screaming, no less) a multi-million dollar lawsuit if their precious (and spoiled) brat wasn't given straight As in all their courses.

It is already the norm, especially for undergraduate college students (I used to teach them). Now a friend of mine who teaches at the graduate level is telling me this attitude is even spreading into graduate school.
