Shawn Lane was my brother in law and I can tell you that he would have flipped over this! I borrowed Holdsworth's Tokyo dream on laser disc when it first came out and he came over and we watched it together. He was literally in the floor and laughing hysterically in disbelief! He would have loved your playing!!

Sorry for your loss- Shawn was not just a gifted musician but seemed to be a really great human.
@SR71YF12 Жыл бұрын
I love this story. Shawn Lane was of course a phenomenon with almost inhuman musical abilities, and to hear about him reacting to Allan Holdworth's playing and music in that way is priceless. Allan has had that impact on many. When Tokyo Dream first came out on Laser Disc, that would have been in the mid-1980s? I also agree with your last sentence, the sheer fluency and effortless playing of Matteo Mancuso is nothing less than phenomenal, and Shawn would no doubt have approved and recognized the novelty of his playing and technique.

@ShittyButTrue There is a reason why Steve Vai, Joe Bonamasa, Al Di Meola and others said that Matteo is a monster and recognized him as a game changer and not Joshua. There are things you cannot do with a pick, that can be done with fingerstyle. Its just impossible with a pick(or impossible to have the same flow). Joshua Meader uses pick. He is extremely talented,but his phrasing is lacking. Too shredy, and I like being shredy, but there has to be enough contrast.Also, Joshua's compositions are average and all his solos sound almost the same. Matteo's compositions are better structured, with better phrasing , but they can get better aswell. They are both young, lets see overtime, but as of now, Matteo is top.

@Thijs-Kuiken2 жыл бұрын
it's incredible...(!!) just binge-watched a lot of his videos... incredible.. yet.. after a while I wish he would draw out of line so to say.. something that would yield a surprise for himself to begin with.. because he NEVER sounds like he surprises himself... and that prevents me from connecting to his playing on an emotional level. I am however - like anyone who hears him I guess - amazed at his ability and versatility (!). I don't know him but he sounds like a likeable guy.. and judging his playing, I think he has a very even temperament... never getting out of balance quickly.. throwing a tantrum.. instead; always thinking rationally, logically and in terms of efficiency. Nothing wrong with that of course (!) but being direct and matter of fact can have the drawback of being less compelling or imaginative when telling a story. I hear parts of what I believe to be his personality, shining through in his playing; amazing as his technical facility - and required affinity with different styles - is, in his playing, a lot of the notes (if not all) sound evenly weighed in terms of intensity, coloration, dynamic shading etc.. becoming somewhat monochrome sounding... so what I'm hearing is "just" an incredible mastery of well organized notes that fit a particular piece ... played in virtuosic ways... but to me the end result sounds a lot of the times like the predictable outcome of a rigorous practicing schedule rather than the kind of inspiration that could generate (with me anyway) a deeper emotional reaction to, or appreciation for, his playing. Guys like Hendrix, Van Halen... but also guys like de Lucia.. Raphael Rabello.. Pat Metheny, Scott Henderson.. just to name a few... they were/are all searching while playing.. and roaming the ground of inspired playing where knowledge and technique (some more than others) were simply means to an end. Either way, this kid is obviously gifted and as a music lover and guitar enthusiast I'm looking very very much forward to hearing what he comes up with and how he develops himself musically. Bla bla bla.. . jeezz.. sorry for the unnecessarily long text 🤪

This is Guthrie playing this in an identical set-up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6qzdpitlsafn80 --> PLEASE tell me, after 5 seconds of Guthrie, you can INSTANTLY spot what's sadly lacking in Matteo's playing (as astounding as it most certainly is)...?? Playing 'fingerstyle', particularly on a heavily distorted lead tone, as here, WILL remove so much dynamics available from the sound.

Been a Govan fan most my life and found this performance emotional in a good way. This song is one of my all time favs. This definitely put a smile on my face ❤

For the longest time I've been saying that Matteo plays as good as Guthrie, only to come across this video. And to say that he's as good as Guthrie is an incredible comparison, because he is!

Per me vince in tutto.

I think matteo doesn't exist.i think he is a hologram creation meant to mess with my mind.how come I've never seen him at the supermarket buying bread and milk like Mr rathurfold and my old english teacher Mrs ostergard.

Any chance you could do waves? There aren't any truly good covers, and yours would be the best.

Only a pure class genius as Guthrie could make such a beautiful piece .But the cover by Matteo is something of extraordinary . The second part especially is better than original if you consider the choice of notes.

Talent. You can train 20 hours a day, but if you don't have exceptional innate qualities (coordination, muscle memory, focus, etc.) you will never reach this level no matter how hard you try.
