Guthrie is sharing some really great insight here and I want to make sure this doesn't fall through the cracks. When he was looking for a break, he moved to a city with more opportunities. Once he got there, he went out almost every single night and hung out at the place where things were happening. When he finally got an opportunity, he was able to take full advantage of it because he'd worked his ass off for years honing his craft. Some folks will call that a lucky break, but that discounts the effort and sacrifice that went into it. As you can probably tell, I really enjoyed this story. I hope you did too. ❤ You should subscribe to Guthrie's channel and tell him Otis sent ya! www.youtube.com/@guthrietrappmusic

Guthrie is a great guy and a serious guitarist. He and Uncle Larry are two of my favorites in Nashville. They both have really good YT channels too. The best thing I can say about GT and Tom Bukovac is that they inspire me to be a better player. Thanks for this, Otis.

I was very fortunate to meet GT when he first started with the Don Kelley band. During a break, we spoke at length and he was being somewhat self-deprecating, but knew he was killing it! And so did we! I won’t ever come close to playing like he does, but I sure enjoy his talent.

Guthrie is a very well rounded musician rooted in traditional and modern American music. GT music takes you on a tour down the backroads of the American landscape and mixes everything from bluegrass , country, jazz, Blues, rock , New Orleans second line funk to Afro-Cuban Jazz. He latest effort with Uncle Larry “In Stereo “ is one of the best instrumental albums I’ve heard in a long time. This guy is a rising star in the guitar world. I highly recommend that if you haven’t heard his music check him out. Love you channel Otis!

ketch'n up to the end i love Guthrie even more as he mentioned after i typed below about perfectin (a fallacy ) and furthermore on a personal note his comments about his family members who didnt even play exposing him to the great art (back to art meaning any form genre style of expressino shared story telling processing life etc) gives this way to easy to spew self loathing about y artistic whatever.......esp given the only consisten thing ive maintaned lately is volunterring (paying in gas even lol) to be a disc jockey on a tiny litttle no money all volunteer community radio station and doing thta show every sunday meow has indeed kept me alive esp when not having finding making other artistic outputs for all the reasons that can happen being lifes realities self doubt apathy fear etc.....yall continue to inspire us to get over tat nonesense......and since as a DJ im mostly sharing other peoples art in the form of music and stories and chats etc Guthries comments validate the time people like me put into such things thank YALL!!!! - SJOCR

Enjoyed seeing friends play today at the Flora-Bama. Johnny Hayes from down here is headed to Dee’s very soon. Hard working song writer. Listening to Kenny Vaughn stories is what landed me on your channel. GT can tell a great story too. ❤ Thanks so much for the effort to time stamp these moments while the world spins. ✨

Guthrie is sharing some invaluable info. All the different styles he talked about playing is so important. I played the same clubs he did way back when. He was phenomenal back then, I'll never forget him and used to wonder what happened to him because he was one of a kind. I am like him in the fact that music was the only thing I could do, lol, certainly not as special as Gunthrie. I drank and partied a lot of years away but I'm living my 2nd life sober. He plays with a guy named Doug Belote who tried out for my band a long time ago. Doug had the unfortunate timing of coming in after a guy named Dowell Davis who toured with George Benson had played with me. Its a good thing I don't have to audition for Doug these days because hes a monster now. There were many phenomenal players back then from Louisiana to Flora Bama, Richard Bell, Scott Boyer, Topper, anyways if you are new you should listen to this interview everyday lol.

Extremely important video. I love this. He is teaching the way a practice becomes a way of life. Any passion that is treated seriously enough through life will eventually lead one to the end of days, successfully and full of wisdom and contentment. As much as I love music, it wasn't the place I found my future. I turned to serious reading and writing over many many years. And these days, almost 75, I feel like I have made it through unfailing exercise of the habit. Thanks a lot for this jewel.

I saw Guthrie play with the Filthy Rich a lot around lower Alabama and Florida, Flora-Bama and Seville. Still have the record. We are the same age. While he was playing originals, I was doing rock, pop, and funk covers up and down the coast. I never did move to Nashville. We used to come up to Nashville to watch Guthrie with Don Kelly and Dave Rowe. Great memories. Guthrie has seen a thing or two!

Guthrie says: "There's a shelf life for a gig no matter how great it is and you're going to start kinda getting burned out." Luke McQueary at Roberts with Kelly's Heroes is at this point. He needs to move on. You can see it so clearly in the way he looks, the way he stands, the interactions on stage. They're looking past each other, miming what used to be real. He's done. Someone should snap him up and get him to the next level of his career.

i like this cat too..... i concur about artists an the term.....visual art is one form of expression so is music writing and whatever the bleep i do.....art is natural to humans in being expression shared story elling and vital to our healkth..... terms ot judge genrify quantify quality by names fame money is while someimes understandable as a referencepoint NOT the point as brother hayes carll said in our commuity radio chat hes proud hes never done anything just for money and as i said having just had the extreme honor of BettySoo and James McMrutry in our tiny all volunteer communty radio staion in madrid new mexico the thru line of all the guests ive bee hnoured to have appear, the stories from brother Otis channel i share (wwith credit of course) etc the thru line is everyone says that in their way...obviously james expressses hiimself diffferently than hayes who is different than brent cobb who differ from jaimee harris and mary gauthier and on and on to shiny kev ribs ..... POINT being the commonality is do they do it for the money or the love....do it for the love cuz its natural dont worry about perfection def dont worry aout fame and hope enough money to the point of sucesss at this point for me would be not needing any other income source.....i aint there so am respectfully jealous of those who are......the trick is taking any jealousy and turning that into motivation ...thanks to guthrie brother otis all yall for the inspirations - stephen jules otis career rubin
