I have personally been affected by being a minority and working for Sam’s Club, a subsidiary of Walmart. I am a black female, I went from stocking to going through MIT to being an assistant manager in 2 years. Walmart runs the state of Arkansas since their base is here. Sarah Huckabee is the governor of this state. Arkansas just got it’s 1st Costco in Little Rock, AR about 3 years ago. They tried forever to break ground in the state but Walmart interfered. The year Costco came to Arkansas, I worked for Sam’s Club, down the road from where it was being built. Home office would come for visits to our club panicking bc of the incoming competition. Our club got a new remodel, we worked tirelessly to get the club together. Little Rock, AR has a large black population. Majority of the associates that I worked with were black. The Club manager that hired me retired and we got a new one. He came from a predominantly white town. Known as one of the “fixers” in the company. He came in and disrupted the entire culture of the workplace, making demands, acting snooty and you could tell that he was prejudice. He brought with him managers from his old club. He would give them preferential treatment. I recall rushing to get everything prepared one morning before opening the club doors. I was helping getting merchandise off the floor and people were running around cleaning bc we had only minutes to spare. My club manager was standing around with his good ol’ white boys about 4 or 5 of them laughing and joking. He was saying how he walked pass a bunch of ‘them’ and smelled weed or something. I was offended by the 2 white males standing there with him being lower rank then me, merely MIT associates, not doing anything to help. But they happened to also be from his old club and of course his peers bc he was in his late twenties. I felt his prejudice. He fired one of the black managers and would go out his way to write people up using a technicality just bc he didn’t like them. He even would try to make me fire old people bc they were slower or walked with support. He wanted me to fire this old white woman just bc she didn’t speak to him and she personally would come to me bc she knew what type of person he was. The 1st day I met him, he had me in the office and you could tell my white male co-manager had been talking to him bc of what he was saying. He would say I want your associates to look at you and ‘ white male co-manager’ like a king and queen. They need to respect you. I said what makes you think they don’t? He would go to lunch with my white male coworker who was previously a manager at his old club. They would sit in the office while I had to do all the work. I later found out that the position that he’d put my co-manager in was just a stepping stone for him to be a club manager like him elsewhere. He only held the position for 4 months so it wasn’t really official I guess….he soon left. I know that he was a snake in the grass for the club manager. So for people who say that white males don’t have privileges is untrue. Even when black people sometimes get a leg up, there are some white people trying to knock them down or make them feel inferior. Just cause they don’t always say something racist out loud, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. We need diversity especially in these damn Red states!
