Had not heard of Guy Clark until a few days after his passing, this song was played on the radio in tribute to him. I had to pull the car over and listen this song after the first verse and when I came to the line 'Name on the Case' a shiver went down my spine. one word sums this man up GENIOUS.

@tang2b This means you must be Verlon Thompson? The pleasure and honour is fully mine - you invented the song! It is one of my most favorite songs because - besides the nice tune and rhythm, it's telling a whole story. Thank you for the song and the posting!

I am absolutely devastated to hear of Guy's passing! He was an amazing lyricist, guitar player, and an incredible musician all together. First we lose the hag, and now Guy? What's happening to all of our country music legends? Honestly, I can't stand country music nowadays! It's all a bunch of shit like getting drunk on Friday night, and driving your pickup truck into a mudhole. It's nothing but trash. There are extremely talented artists like Chris Stapleton, but it seems like for ever genius, there are 20 asshats like Luke Bryan, and Cole Swindell. -_- Man, fuck modern country music! Sorry for the rant, but I'm really gonna miss this hero. R.I.P. Guy Clarke. There are 3 things that money can't buy. True love, homegrown tomatoes, and your talent and passion for music. You will be missed.

I do concur. A sad loss. As for the what people call country music...it's all bad rock music with fiddles - you could say the same about the standard of song writing generally though; it's lamentable. But then, no one wants to think to hard about anything these days.

For better or worse, ANY kind of music can be found, today, online. Someone will be playing it. And why mourn country music, or even acknowledge it. Americana is much better music! I heard some songs by 'I'm with her' last week. (the name was chosen a year before Hillary's campaign). Stunning. 'An Americana Supergroup'. Or listen to anything they've done, separately. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the 'another day, another time' concert, Chris Thile and associates... It gives me hope for humanity. Something I'm running out of, like Guy ran out of days!

These lyrics are just unbelievable. Is this guy as underrated as i think he is? Why?
@tommcgrath162610 жыл бұрын
He's underrated by those outside Texas and outside songwriting circles. His nickname is "the craftsman" because of how meticulous and well-crafted his songs are. He's written any number of duds, but when he hits the mark, he's sublime.
@Jockeyshifter9 жыл бұрын
Tom McGrath Not underrated by "those in the know", in my circle of string-benders, here in Southern Ontario Canada. Guy's music, and that of his friends, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earl, Waylon & Willie, Kris Kristopherson, and related friends and family, are a staple here. 'Keep on pickin'

Guy Clark is part of that singer-songwriter-outlaw tradition that includes Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock. None of these guys were ever Nashville Country stars, their song were TOO good for Country radio of ALL eras.

I'm by no means a great guitar player but I can relate so much to this song. I own several acoustic guitars and all of them play themselves in different ways. It's some equation between my hands and the instrument that make the style and even the songs that will come out of a guitar. I don't know if I've found "That" instrument just yet but the most recent addition to my collection, a Taylor 314ce-LTD "KOA" has probably sent my abilities and playing lightyears ahead of where it would've been without and most of my improvement happened almost the second I picked that guitar up. To all you guitar players out there - I hope you find the guitar that does it for you and you never put it down.
@chuckHart706 жыл бұрын
I used to think THAT guitar was out there too, until I realized I just thought that by buying a new or classic guitar, that I would somehow get the mojo. Nope. Decided its me that sucks, and not the guitars... still on that quest to though. Searching for perfection in this world is tough.

I've been picking for years. Made my living at it. I even saw Guy play at Sand Mountain in Houston. (As well as countless time since in other venues.) I am still looking for the guitar that will lead me to the fourth-level of Zen thinking. If I were told that is how Clapton did it, I might be swayed to that belief. Some people are so "other worldly" that there is no earthly explanation how they arrived where they did. It was either divine intervention, a quantum leap or fucking magic.

"I just don't know where I learned it..." Amazing revelation about guitar playing. Seems to come over the devoted player from another time-space..."..it was hard just to tell who was playing who..." Perhaps it is a steady state alternate universe called 'guitarism'. I got to lay my hands on the Clapton signature model Martin---but any old guitar will do!

I kinda g feel like I showed up to the party just in time to help clean up (there's a song about that too) but I just love these old story tellin' songs! Been a Chris LeDeux fan ever since I can remember. Lyrics are so moving and poignant ... LOVE stuff like that. Yes, the instrumental is amazing ... double fisted? I'm thinking so but a good right hand could possibly do it all I'll bet. At any rate I'd love to just sit and watch you play, Brother. I sat next to a guy named @TimHoward and jammed a little. He was incredible too. Like his guitar was part of him. I'd sure like to reconnect with that guy.

Well, I was passing by a pawn shop In an older part of town Something caught my eye And I stopped and turned around I stepped inside and there I spied In the middle of it all Was a beat up old guitar Hanging on the wall. What do you want for that piece of junk I asked the old man He just smiled and took it down And he put it in my hand He said you tell me what it's worth You're the one who wants it Turn it up, play a song And let's just see what haunts it So I hit a couple of cords In my old country way of strumming And then my fingers turned to lightning Man.. I never heard it coming It was like I always knew it I just don't know where I learned it It wasn't nothin' but the truth So I just reared back and burned it Well I lost all track of time There was nothing I couldn't pick Up and down the neck Man.. I never missed a lick The guitar almost played itself There was nothing I could do It was getting hard to tell Just who was playing who When I finally put it down I couldn't catch my breath My hands were shaking And I was scared to death The old man finally got up Said where in the Hell you been I've been waiting all these years For you to stumble in Then he took down an old dusty case Said go on and pack it up You don't owe me nothing And then he said good luck There was something spooky in his voice And something strange on his face When he shut the lid I saw my name was on the case
