There is a fort in India (called Golconda). It's main gate has a unique design such that if someone stands in the middle and claps, it can be heard at a spot 200ft away, loud and clear. but it isn't that audible for persons standing nearby the guy who claps

Notice how the echo is more intense when you are closer to the ground. The surrounding planters are echoing back the sound source from multiple directions and when they meet, they are combining, amplifying the original sound. A listener outside the circle, would probably be in an area where the sound waves are being cancelled out, the same principle used in noise canceling headphones. Simple explanation, but still a very cool effect.

This "center of the universe" pop culture landmark is in the middle of Boston Ave pedestrian bridge, what used to be Boston Ave between 1st and Archer streets. The taller buildings built later and the other structures are why this acoustic anomaly now exists on this bridge that once went through as a street. The sculpture, Artificial Cloud, was the 1991 creation of Bob Haozous for Mayfest. Installed in 1992.
@ph33lix8 жыл бұрын
At the center, the sound reflected by the planters arrive in the center at the same time and each of them, with roughly the same sonic signature, will reinforce each other and sound louder to the listener in the center.Once off center, there will be a time difference between the reflections, and between each reflection and source... a small difference in arrival time of each reflection will result in sonic cancellations and that's why things will sound weirdly softer when off center.Using multiple sources of the same sound to multiply output power and using time differences to shape the output projection is how line array speakers in big concerts work!

So if u was to line pillows up along the walls of the planters then it shouldn't work?
@ph33lix2 жыл бұрын
@@51-FS as someone who has been building DIY speakers and planning acoustic treatment in my home theater, I'm willing to bet yes. Current pillows are stuffed with Polyfil and should be able to absorb frequencies from 250Hz and up; the lowest fundamental frequency of a male "chest" voice is around 250Hz, so that reinforcing effect should be greatly diminished. Heck, if you line up random objects/people against the floor/planter corner, that would scatter the reflections and greatly diffuse the acoustic energy of the returning sound too.

Strange that I find this "vlog" that has not uoaded anything after this video until the same day that i visit the spot and find this video when looking for info about this... Its also the day the "vlog" uploaded its second video, 7 years later. It was built in 1991, the designer/builder has not publicly disclosed how the effect works. The best guess is the circle of planter boxes act as parabolic dishes and the center of the circle is the focal point of them. The tower is a sculpture installed after the sound sculpture that pokes fun at people looking at the fake cloud instead of the real clouds in the sky. 7 years after this upload the circle has deteriorated a lot, at some point a series of bricks were replaced with lights. There is a plan to redo the area in 2024.
