my cities dickhead mayor decided to make every cop patrol solo. the day after that happened a police officer got pushed into train tracks and nearly got shot by his own gun. this order was instantly reverted and the superintendent of the police department basically said "told you so" to our mayor. i live in NYC. multiple times has 2 officers proven to be better. including in a shooting that happened in harlem where 2 officers were shot (both killed) and where 2 officers were ambushed in queens where a officer was shot and the second officer literally trickshotted the shooter, killing him.

Yeah, mental health within police, military, etc., is typically heavily negatively stigmatized as well. Yet there are many who function perfectly fine with mild to moderate treatment for mental health conditions, even ones that require meds. The negative stigma needs to end, of those who seek treatment, and policies need to be updated to allow such to happen without fear of repurcussion from dept/govt. Having staff mental health peeps ain't cutting it, because nobody really trusts talking to someone on the payroll, especially when it is something not directly job related, ie manic depression, schizo-type disorders, even severe bouts of PTSD causing extreme sleep deprivation, hallucinations etc. They need to have a bit of an anonymous sort of setup, to where there is a layer of separation so peeps can trust not facing career repercussions for seeking treatment instead of hiding shit and battling symptoms without any sort of treatment.

@ok this man wasn't a criminal prior to his two run ins with the law and was actually law enforcement before he refused the EAP and got himself fired. His attempted murder of a law enforcement officer is what got him killed, but I 100% believe it was due to his mental health issues. It's not as simple as more health care, less weapons. Health care is cost prohibitive for some without insurance, and prison becomes a place people can get treated for free. There's a lot of nuance to the issue. But this one? Dude just needed help, didn't get it, went into a delirium or manic episode, and got himself killed. It's sad, but not a statement about anything larger.

It felt like both officers handled this one pretty well. Obviously Officer 2 for being aware enough to shoot in time, but also Officer 1 for rolling out of the way to make it harder for the suspect to shoot him while also giving Officer 2 a much clearer shot. Sure it's always a horrible mistake to lose your firearm but I have to say Officer 1 did all the right things after losing it.

Handled pretty well? Is that what this is called now? He arrives at the scene and seconds later lets an obviously violent criminal take control of his vehicle and then even his weapon?! First of all, he stopped way too close to him. Second, he let the guy get even closer. Maybe America is too "special" of a place for me to understand, but running and growling at a police officer is not something a normal person would do in such a situation, and not something that should be encouraged. At that point already it was quite reasonable to open fire. He also had a taser on his hip. Why didn't take it out and use it immediately instead of hesitating and jumping around with a gun?

I ended up being able to escape him about 6 mos later by completing leaving the state...found out after i left that he had been using PCP for the second half of our relationship...around the time he started having the rage issues. It could also be a mental health episode. From experience, if you get to a bad enough place and snap, even if you know the response your actions will get, that logical part of your brain is being pushed down and shouted over by the illness. It's like being the only sober person in a room of 50 people. Once everyone around you is riled up and wanting to do the same thing, you're going to have a very hard time talking them all down.

Heck, there was one post of a video where a cop was trying to arrest someone for no reason as 6 other cops just watched in awe and disappointment. One, believe a deputy, stopped him and essentially said "You can't do that, sit down." The kicker was the fact that the comments were pointing out he was probably there due to unions then that dissolved into a bunch of people agreeing conservatives only want unions for cops because they like watching black people getting beat to death and hate workers. Each of these comments had hundreds of likes lol
