+bethhir Thanks for helping the viewers. Sometimes, mindset, background, family, and the like are not important to the discussion -- for me, it's sometimes hard to bypass these subjects. +bethhir Thank you so much for putting this up. It should never take someone 16 mins to get to how to do a review. The talking about his life in the video is so distracting and makes others not want to watch his videos. smh
@elainejackson99638 жыл бұрын
The preamble was not a distraction for me at but just served to put the whole research process into context of an integrative life experience. As such, it helped to clarify the presenter's positionality as a real human being who recognizes the challenges of committed to family and also to his professional advancement. This kind of introduction does enable the viewer to appreciate the complexities of the research journey that is interwoven with one's total set of experiences and thus cannot be treated as an isolated segment of the individual's life. As a personal preference, the viewer may choose to skip the preamble and hasten to the 'meat of the matter'.

Thank you for affirming some of the things I have already been doing (instinctively) and for adding a few more tips that I can use like doing the matrix. I've struggled with how to organize all the materials I have gathered in the last few months. Most of all I appreciate your acknowledging the feelings that I've gone through in this journey--isolation, confusion and self-doubt. It is good to know that I am not the only one who felt that way. Thank you so much! Am ready to move forward again.

I am 58 years old man, English as a second language. Now decided to carry my lifelong dream of possessing a doctoral degree. I was hoping one of my two children could go forward to earn an advanced level, to meet my wish, but both, for now, are not concerned. And that prompts me to go on at this age. God willing, I am embarking on my first class June 21 at University of Phoenix online for “Business Management and Organizational Leadership”. Listening to your free advice “how to write a literature” really helpful. As I stated I did not see the first class, but when I’m expecting anything that could hold valuable information, here I found yours, and I am grateful having it. Thank you so much.

Great guide. This video definitively is a huge help in completing my dissertation. The collection of the sources and organization that you mention is so significant. I feel so pumped up now, I've been feeling a little down lately, thinking that I've reached rock bottom, my literature review was not clicking and I was going back and forth between sources and my writing. I have a significant number of sources; my organization is not the best though, but I can see how to do it now. That motivational intro really got me going..! Greetings Dr. Guy. When you began the steps in your video on writing a literature review, I could not help but have mixed emotions - tearing up with joy that I finally got to a source that clearly explained everything about developing a good literature review. Yet, I was somewhat internally upset because I have had to grope for almost 16 months in just trying to get a clear understanding as to what I am suppose to be developing as a quality literature review. Every piece of your brief has inspired me and affirms in what and how I am to accomplish this part of my dissertation process. I am a tactile and visual learner, so I appreciate the slides as well as the traditional method of searching and organizing with the papers and then organizing. I am also hoping my timeline can be reduced down from 9 months since I am currently at the IRB stage pending approval to investigate. Then refining what literature review I did for my proposal and finalizing after completing my data analysis. Again thank you for an awesome source.

The best usable thing I got from this long video is the Dissertation matrix. I think it is an excellent tool that helps in organizing data. The second best thing is to start with identifying the purpose statement and the study variables. I wish there is some sort of updating of the material in this video as learners are more reliant on online resources more than hard copies.

Hello Dr. Guy! I'm just starting to work on my master's thesis and found this really helpful when it comes to plan the organization around it. This will help me alot in the future. I will have to checkout more of your vids. What i find interesting is the matter of communication with the chair and committee (in my case a mentor and examiner). Here you give the feeling that it is more important to approach them in a serious manner, this is just my feelings about this. It feels that it is more important to act serious and in control then you are in reality. This is just the feeling i'm getting, others will probably disagree. Therefore i would love to see a video where you speak about "the grey fog", the feeling that you don't know everything or have missed something, you gave a good description of it in the beginning of the video. Specially i would love to see strategies to resolve this. I think a huge problem with the current educational system is that we as students are very controlled by the teachers resulting in challenges when these directional forces are gone. Resulting in student acting in unprofessional ways and getting stuck, sometimes by brain ghosts. They don't really know what to do because the system have always told them how to act and think. As my peers would put it "Freedom is terrifying".... And by the way, keep on staying awesome! :D
@guyewhite8 жыл бұрын
+DND Hi DND, your ideas here are quite interesting to me. In terms of working with one's chair, I do think that it's best to keep the relationship hierarchical and "old school' most of the time. This places the owned-ness of the dissertation project solely on the learner. While the chair should support support support, the learner should be engaging in the study work that is required to finish. The chair is a guide that appears, hopefully, at the most important moments of the journey. Some chairs want to be much more closer to their candidates. Many don't have the time. My aspiration is to be the resource at all times that I possibility can. Some people like to lean into the structure -- others like to break it. Can you guess which I am? :)

+Nelson Cody Hi Nelson! While I know of the BIA, I don't know what growing up in the BIA system is like. Clearly, perhaps in spite of that, you are making major steps forward. Your Masters! Great! Please, send me a question any time!

Awesome! This is exactly what I have been searching for. The video was very helpful, it appeared to move slowly in the beginning and this frustrated me. I wanted you to move the subject matter along faster. In retrospect, Im glad you too the time to explain your perspective while walking through the process. The detail provided regarding gathering and organization is priceless! Thanks!

I like how you give direction on how many sources per week we should target and how we should document each reference as we go. Do you have a video on how to search in search engines like Google Scholar?

Very helpful information! I have been struggling with my literature review for several months now and this video gave me some really helpful tips, especially on how to organize the quotes by cutting them apart and taping them together. As a "paper person," I thought that was genius. Thank you for the help, and I'm looking forward to checking out your website.

Aloha Dr. Guy, I have written the proposal for this dissertation in phenomenology, but I was told that I needed a writing coach in order to really write it. I had jumbled sentences and it was not aligned. I tried to find the writing coach at the writing center at University of the Rockies but they sent it on to the Dr. Sherman who has become my third chair. Now, I am in Delphi, and I feel as though I am starting over. I have epilepsy, and the topic of this dissertation originally was Lived Experiences of persons with complex partial seizures that secondarily generalize seeking employment and facing unemployment: A Phenomenological Study. When I moved to the Delphi, I changed the title, so that it related more to how the Delphi study would allow employers to be more motivated to hire persons with complex partial seizures that secondarily generalize. Nworow that I have submitted the wrong proposal, as I had sent it to the research person and asked him to look at it. Then I sent the first chapter and was making all of the corrections with the first chapter when my chair told me to take some time off and learn to use my computer better. This is a new Toshiba, but I have been writing on typewriters and computers since the 1960s and publishing books since 1977. I have published five books. Epilepsy, A Personal Approach (1985) was published with input from two neurologists and I will publish a 2nd edition of this in 2017 or 2018. Very little material has been published on employment and epilepsy (Bishop, et al, 2007; Fernandez, et al, 2011). Right now, I feel as though I have been sitting in a mud puddle for 6 months. Sherman tefiraches Delphi to 40 persons, and heaven knows what else. He is not the person who will help you. He tells you what to do and then leaves you alone, but has his webinars which are the same thing again and again. Yes, I have used books, and I have used quotes. I haven't ever copied the copyright page, or the work cited page. To cut to the point, I am afraid that they will make me throw everything about epilepsy out, rather than use information on what occurred in the US when Gov. McKineley set up a home for persons with epilepsy. I believe that that is important to show the history in this country of how people have been treated who have this type of epilepsy. I have been told that when I get to the second chapter, a writing coach will appear and change it from a phenomenological study to a Delphi study. I write about people's stories, but we need to have a dissertation appear that will show how in the future the status quo of non hiring of CPSSG does not continue. Purpose statement is covering employment ------how employers look at this type of epilepsy hiring, and also I want to be sure that the reader understands just what these persons live with and how their quality of life can be improved if they can find work, as opposed to starting your own business. I feel as though I am going to the wrong places. Sincerely, Nancy C Schumacher 203-393-8765 cell or carlkislesclassics410@gmail.com. I would really enjoy getting some input from you. I look forward to hearing from you. Your advice is good. Nancy .

Hi Guy, Your presentation is simply awsome and energizing. I just felt a burden off me after the video. Thoug you were not specific about details such as how to search and select materials for literature review, the generic summary of this work is quite helpful. It's amazing to see you and your wife graduate with PhD. I would want to request for coaching on how to conduct and select a literature search. Thanks

Introduction was lengthy yet it was interesting to set the tone of the session. Source gathering technique was informative. My expectation was how to write the lit review paragraphs, its flow , length of each para, conclusion etc. But it was good to know the priority setting importance for timely completion of the thesis writing.

Hi Dr. Guy, thank you for the GREAT videos. I am starting the dissertation process. This knowledge will save me time which is my main goal. I do have a life I would like to get back to! However, you blew me away when you said (400 references). I was thinking 40 would be enough.
@guyewhite9 жыл бұрын
Magalenn Cotton Hi Magalenn! Thank you for sending me this! :) If you are synthesizing at a doctoral (or even Masters) level, you'll go through 40 citations in under 10 pages, EASILY. Remember, in a dissertation about 70% of the citations should be of multiple sources (like "(Jones, 2012; Marcus, 2014; Peters, 2015)"). The reason for this is that doctoral writers are expected to synthesize great amounts of information together. It's not about direct quoting anyone. It's about showing your mastery around the subject. Send me a question any time!
