Different. I wonder if they mean "submit either a conceptual or theoretical framework." Sometimes, people use the terms interchangeably. However, they are a bit different. Frameworks, in general, allow us to understand something better. A theroetical framework is an EXISTING MODEL that could be used to understand something. A conceptual framework, on the other hand, is CREATED when there are no existing models that, alone, can help us understand what you are studying. People often "create" a conceptual framework by piecing together many theories.

Haven't really put one together but if I had to do it now, I'd say 'the purpose of this qualitative research is to examine the motivation levels and self-concept of Kurdish pre - undergraduate EAP students in homogeneous class groups in Kurdistan, North Iraq in 2016.'

Stacey Xaelani I recommend narrowing from (1) motivation level and (2) self-concept down to a single aspect of these undergraduates. For example, you could choose self-concept... and then do lots of digging in the literature to see what you really mean by self concept. Is there a specific PART of self concept about which you are interested?

Can the theorecical framework of such research be strictly followed just to see how it works at another location. Hi Sanusi! Theoretical frameworks are more like the glasses one wears to examine the problem your study focuses upon. You can usually apply such frameworks (as long as the literature supports you doing so) anywhere. When you transplant frameworks from one place to another, there are cultural concerns to consider. When you say "method" at the end, it makes me think that you are talking about a policy or set of steps rather than a framework. What are you considering for your study?

Hi doc., I am planning to work on a method of investigation and remediation of a contaminated industrial area in Nigeria. This will involve field and laboratory works for collection and analysis of samples respectively. The method I am planning to use has only been used in Europe and it seems to lack a lot of literatures at the moment. My fear was since there are no many literatures on it, how can I develop a good theoretical framework? which you've helped answered with the transplanting of the framework from one place to another. For my case, along with the cultural differences, other factors such as the geology-hydrogeology of the study area will also be considered. More suggestions of yours will still be helpful. Sanusi Shiru Hi Sanusi. Interesting question. In the end, your theoretical framework is the LENS that you will use to look at the problem, the participants, and the results. So, you definitely want to examine a theoretical framework that already exists. It has NOTHING to do with your purpose statement. Instead, it is what "eyeglasses" you will use to look at your purpose statement. For example, if you used a theoretical framework like AQAL (Ken Wilber), you might look at the issue via 4 quadrants. The key is to find a WAY OF LOOKING at the research. That is what a theoretical framework is: a way of looking at the purpose statement you write.

Are visual frameworks what you call "conceptual frameworks"? If not what is the difference?

Hi Joseph. I have not heard of the words "visual frameworks" as such before... but that does not mean that someone refers to them like this. For me, theoretical or conceptual frameworks can come in two forms. First, there are ones that are visual in nature (they have a drawing or model illustrated). Second, there are ones that are simply a concept mentioned in words. In research, I tend to prefer those that can be visualized as it makes my work much simpler as the writer to help people understand.

Raj KC Hi Raj. Thank you for your engagement and comments. They mean the world to me. Theoretical frameworks provide us the lenses by which we can examine a certain topic. They help us see specific aspects of a specific problem. When we are talking about writing definitions, the best strategy is often to find how one author defines a specific term -- then, see how others define it. Same? Different? Dr Guy, I am struggling with the framework for my dissertation. Matter of fact, I received a failing grade on a paper I just submitted for this very piece of the study. I have never failed a paper assignment in my entire learning career since age 6! I cannot wrap my head around what it is I am do to exactly. Hi Joe! Something like this could work (depending on your dissertation type): "... Therefore, this study examined XYZ through the lens of ABC theory as described by Jones (2013)... This lens is described as ABC. It has four parts. First... Second... Finally." However, consider reading dissertations from your program to see what the norm is!

Queen Carr Hi Queen, it's common for articles to invoke such frameworks in the background/intro sections. However, the key question is, "Where do dissertations identify their theoretical frameworks?" They do this in three places: (1) at the end of chapter 1, usually; (2) in chapter 2 near the end, and (3) in the carrying out of the methodology of the study. Does that answer your question? I feel like i'm missing something.

This is the direction my supervisor suggested. I designed to use content anaysis, survey and experiment. I already studied one year on this. Thank you for your kind reply. It's difficult to measure relationship between TV and identity/values in a correlational manner. There are so many considerations and variables at play. However, if you consider a qualitative design, where you interviewed participants, then you could find out much! A great book that could help is called "Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches." I'd consider starting by reading this book. MENG XU Very interesting question! This comes into some of the literature review and theoretical framework questions you will be answering in your study. First, there are books that explain culture values from multiple perspectives. You could select something involving critical race theory... integral theory... feminist perspectives. MANY! That's such a big question that it may be worth asking your participants what they think the values expressed in the videos/TV are and ask their stance on these. Quite interesting! +ithinkso8606 Regarding your first question, I think that a "way of seeing" your data is important. If you are looking through the entire world of your data without a pair of lenses, the focus can be quite blurry or, worse, you are seeing so much that it's hard to understand what is being seen. A theoretical framework helps you organize and conceptualize what is being seen in terms of what your theoretical framework offers.

hey well, I read different articles and different researches and I chose the variables, research questions, and other things. The problem is that I don't know the theory I MUST follow. I mean I understood the articles, related them to my research questions. But, really how can I know that this is the theory !! IN the articles and researches, they mentioned the methodology they used, but not the theory !

This is a great input. I'm Prof. Jay (from Prof. Jay's Vlog) and I love research. We can also use the guidelines made by Cresswell and Cresswell on how to use a theory in a quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research.

You say lens I say bias. On the one hand the topic is massive and needs to be cut down to microscopic levels. On the other hand, there has to be justification you are looking at the most interesting bit still not thought about, and still worthy of attention. Donald Rumsfeld spoke of unknown unknowns, and many of these have to be left as such.

nassz100 It's not uncommon to have 2 theories in use! The question is, "Is that a norm in your program and school?" You'll have to look at other dissertations published within your program to see the answer to that question.
