The really amazing thing is to see a Portuguese folk potter pick up a 40 pound bell jar (a closed in bottle shape with no base made to protect plantings ) with only one of these wooden rings in the pot .Up it goes wet off the wheel onto a board . ! . The clay was a little stiff I give you that.. If you look at some Mediterranean pots and Spanish pots you will see them with wooden supports on the inside for picking them up .

If you are cutting the pot in half with your move thats a good thing . It means your grabbing a good amount of clay . Your outside right hand is making the command for going up and in and your inside hand is making the command to go up and out . That cuts the pot in half after the first third .. As you get past the first third of the pull be carefull not to keep going in with the right hand instead follow your left hands direction up and out . Good luck . Yours Guy .

Yes this kind of "power Pull is almost like turning that bit of clay going up inside out all the way up. The great thing about learning how to throw is everything that goes wrong should be its own answer on how to fix it. If you are cutting clay away on the outside then the right hand is "chiseling or cutting not directing and compressing. The same problem can happen on the inside. Remember I said students are better at moving then compressing clay . This is a perfect example of that point .

Hi Guy, I am having some trouble when I am raising the walls. I go to raise them and get the clay at the bottom, but when i start to raise, the chunk i am raising folds over itself and comes right off. Am i doing anything wrong? Please if anyone knows could they give me some advice? Thanks
