Castle of Guédelon under construction

The Château de Guédelon (French: Château de Guedelon) is a castle in Treigny (Yonne, France) built in the 20th and 21st centuries using medieval techniques. The design is inspired by 13th-century building plans from the time of Philip II of France, and follows the ideas of experimental archaeology.

It started in 1997 as an amateur project of restorer Michel Guyot. Guyot, while studying the red-brick castle of Saint Fargeau from the 15th century, discovered that it was built on a medieval fortified castle. This gave him the idea to recreate such a castle using the original techniques. Initially he was not taken seriously, but when it gradually became clear that he was serious, the French government and the European Union provided 2.5 million euros in subsidy. The project is now self-supporting through donations, entrance fees and sales.
Guédelon answers the questions of how such a building came about, where the materials came from, how the material was supplied, and what tools and lifting equipment were used. Maryline Martin looked for a suitable location, convinced governments and partners, took care of permits and recruited workers. During the Middle Ages, the transport of building materials was slow and expensive, so a place was chosen in the forest of Guédelon, near a quarry where wood, clay, sand and water are also sufficiently available.

Noch beeindruckender finde ich, welche Bauwerke im Mittelalter entstanden sind. Einige Gebäude sind fast 1000 Jahre alt. Wie viele Stahl- und Betonbauten müssen nach 50 Jahren abgerissen werden, weil sie morsch sind?

j ai eu le plaisir de le visiter à trois reprises ; c'est un émerveillement permanent ; ce qui est fait là bas est absolument génial, féérique ; on a vraiment l'impression de voyager dans le temps, beaucoup plus qu'en visitant un château existant du 12 éme siècle, c'est impressionnant ; c'est une belle et riche idée d'avoir créé cela. What I like about seeing the building process is it allows you to extrapolate what ruins looked like before they fell into disrepair. You see that so much of the castle was wooden hording or wooden stairs. Some of the failings were down to stone being taken and mortor wearing away.

The type of mortar also varied greatly from region to region. The quality and strength was very different. You can see that the type of stone used also determines the way of construction. With sandstone, granite, mouldings, shist, they have to use different methods of piling, masonry, sawing and felling. Guédelon is a nice example of how they could have built a castle in the past. It is not the method of how should they build a castle, but rather: This is how they could have built a castle. A visit to the site is really worth taking a look.

Cela risque en effet de compliquer leur compréhension de la séquence chronologique. A moins qu'ils ne retrouvent des vestiges d'installations touristiques (parking, boutiques, wc, objets souvenirs) qui leur permettent de comprendre qu'il s'agissait d'une expérience archéologique ouverte au public.

C'est franchement plus intéressant que de voir des ruines de château, l'immersion est plus réaliste, imaginer à partir de ruines demande trop de réflexion surtout quand on parle de "restauration"🙃

Je trouve beaucoup plus amusant de voir comment un château est construit avec les possibilités et les connaissances d'il y a 1000 ans. En ruines, ce sont des pierres qui gisent là. Il ne se passe rien. Vous ne voyez aucun progrès ou construction du château. Assurez-vous de venir voir comment construire un château. N'hésitez pas à vous arrêter plusieurs fois pour voir l'évolution. Assurez-vous que le travail progresse très lentement. Rien ne presse.

OSHA didn't exist in the Middle Ages, so we don't use these rules either. What we do do for our safety are safety shoes and, if necessary, glasses and/or a helmet. If not needed, these security objects are not used. But, we see that we work safely. Otherwise it will not be done.
