Human brains do have the processing power to recognise a note. When the note or a slight variation of it repeats with specific time gap the brain process it as rhythm. Since our brain very well adopted with time gaps ( it can do it the gap) and it can do kinds of mathematical operations like addition and subtraction, by synthesizing two or more notes it can construct musical notes.
