My word: that was spectacular. I never saw Gwyneth live, but my wife & I did see Ghena Dimitrova & Nicola Marticccu in Turandot live at Verona 1991. Ghena too had a similarly massive voice (you could hear everthing crystal clear in an audience of 25,000 people) yet her pianissimi were exquisite and carried right to the end of the coliseum.

I only made my first visit to Verona last summer! Better late than never! We saw Nabucco.

@@wotan10950We first went to Verona in 1991: saw Rigoletto, Turandot & Nabucco. Then, a year later, we took my son to see Aida. He was most impressed, especially by the ice cream!

I wouldn't call it perfect, but yeah, I love her version of In questa reggia

My wife and I saw her onstage as Elektra, and the following season as Turandot. We met her backstage; lovely, friendly, very soft speaking voice. My wife was so confused; when we left her dressing room, she asked, “Was that soft-spoken lady the same one who just obliterated the entire chorus and orchestra?” 😅

We saw her in other roles, as well: a lovely graceful Marshallin, a beautifully sung Fidelio, a crazed Salome, an imperious Isolde, a wild Kundry, a heroic Brunnhilde. Unfortunately, she rarely sang Italian opera in New York.
