Here's something I'd like to add as well: Utilize muscle memory! When you build strength/endurance/etc. you never fully lose it once it's gained, you just may get rusty. This is why you can take like two years off of lifting weights but then be back to your former strength in like 2 months. So take advantage of this: When you are in a season of heavy drumming, take a break from the exercises, but in a slow drumming period, you can hit them full steam! I like to divide my year into sections where I have a handful of months I work on my chops hardcore, a few months I work on strength, a few months I work on endurance, and a few months I work on cardio. I take a week's break in between each period.

Great content! After years of working out at the gym you realize that often not enough people take care of their "drumming body". Also I would encourage anyone to warm up the whole body before drumming, without drumming at all if you know what I mean. First warm up your body without even thinking of drums, then warm up at the drums and then start your session! What is also really effective is to see how much benefit your central nervous system gets while warming up. After you're done with the warm up and sit on the drums your nervous system is well activated and reactive and it can does crazy wonders to your drumming! Thank you for uploading this.

nice. the first excercise is also used in occupational and physical therapy to combat and prevent joint problems in the feet.
@MRC_50003 ай бұрын
for some people the second excercise could be a little hard on the base joints of the toes. a possible alternative would be an isometric excercise where you lie down, stretched out legs, soles to the wall and do the same movement (flex the foot), but only build tension (you are not supposed to move) and hold it for 10 to 20 seconds, relaxing and repeat (i worked as an occupational therapist for eight years). but yes, stretching is essential and good. the muscle memory is also a very interesting topic in that regard, but way too vast for a comment.
@BrendrumJones3 ай бұрын
Thanks for that information. Yeah muscle memory is very vast, in drumming a small part it’s the length of practice. Long periods to instil it and short periods to recall the movement and execute it at a drop of a hat. Muscle are slow learners.

wow! awesome video man, one of my favorite all time drummers is Billy Cobham and he is a serious athlete!! Was trained in the Navy and even today at over 80 years old, kicks ass on double bass drums! If you havent seen him as of late, look up a vid from 2023. He's a monster. Anyways, I've been looking for resources on how to build better body strength specifically for drumming, and this is one of the few things I found! very solid video that i will be using to hopefully get closer to cobham status! much appreciated

I play pretty fast in my band (170 to 200bpm) and I need something to help me go from a cold start to that fast drumming when playing live. I think these sound great for building up a bit of extra muscle to help me with that tension that usually slams me in the first few songs. Really excellent drumming video, nice tangential but important topic I think!

Forearms and fingers buy a Gyro Ball ! Triceps singles(left/right) just use the cable it self without accessoires as if you hit a kit and use the highest position in the cable machine. Next tip cost you haha

When you are drumming regularly, do you still need the exersizes?
@BrendrumJones3 жыл бұрын
Yo, You dont have to but it may help when pushing to a higher level of playing. Like look a Djokovic, he slipped away a few years ago, went gluten free and bounced back to the best he has ever been. what im saying is that very small margins in the next level. small things can have big impacts
@OllieSticksman2 жыл бұрын
Ok, so Tricep kickbacks are only giving you range of motion from the point where the weight is halfway back, so my advice is the overhead if you're using weights. Otherwise, I'd suggest cable or bands and using pull downs instead. As for the shins - whatever you can use to resist raising your foot from toes pointed would be best. Bands would be best. Wedge your toes under something solid and loop a band under your knee for resistance. Or get a small solid block, band under it forming a little loop in front. Get your toes in the loop and heel on the block and lift those toes up and back down.

@@BrendrumJones another little time saver - most side shoulder stuff also hits the fronts. You can skip doing 2 separate things by doing overhead shoulder presses

@@OllieSticksman cool, do you think that the exercise in the gym helps with drumming
@OllieSticksman2 жыл бұрын
@@BrendrumJones I think it would definitely help drumming longevity and general endurance and perhaps even posture. Plus, I think it's a good safeguard against injury, especially when combined with the warming up and stretching down concept to keep our muscles, joints and tendons nice and supple
@andreip7849 Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't we train them for endurance instead of hypertrophy? I mean, not with 10-12 reps, but like 20-25
@BrendrumJones11 ай бұрын
Sure but it depends on the muscle, for instance defiantly not the forearms

Is it good to take a break before playing the drums after working out? I do not want to practice while my muscles are still recovering from a work out.
@BrendrumJones Жыл бұрын
Yeah no, i think just make sure that your not stiff, so that stops you from preforming at you best. I wouldn't over think it either , this is jus a guide to help drummer think about the muscles you use while playing

I'm a beginner drummer learning for 10 months now. Is it okay to start with this physical exercises?
@BrendrumJones Жыл бұрын
I would think for a beginner you should spend more time focusing on playing, The exercises will do no harm but its more to improve the active muscles we use to strengthen them. I would pay more attention on technique at the beginning, i hope it helps

If you’re able reach out to a medical professional. You could possibly get physical therapy. I can’t promise anything nor am i a medical professional but something is better than nothing
