Elena mukhina won the world championship in 1978 beating Nadia Comanenci and Nellie Kim. She fractured her leg just before the 1979 world championship and didnt compete then. Later in 1980, 2 weeks before the moscow 1980 olympics she snapped her spine when she underrotated and landed on her chin when she was forced to practise the Thomas salto with a weakened and crooked leg before her fractured leg was fully healed. Elena Mukhina was the true greatest of all time.

Your comment provides the perfect explanation of why we have spent the past 2 years posting 2300 vintage videos on our Imasportsphile web page....with intentions of spending the next 4 -5 years posting our remaining 7700 videos....cuz when one of our posts can bring about "both beautiful and sad" memories of one of the great talents of their time and days gone by....it speaks to the purpose of our efforts....for we believe these artists and athletes deserve their place in history.

This actually isn't Kathy Johnson - she was still competing at this time, in fact she'd go on to record one of the best all-around finishes ever achieved by an American up to that time at the 1978 World Championships the following year. The commentator is apparently Nancy Theis, who competed for the USA in Munich in 1972.

Roger MoreLli, thanks for your comment.....as our best guess is that we probably do have the entire program....and since we are in process of the daunting task of transferring 2300 hrs. of vintage sports, comedy and music from Sony Betamax cassette to digital....in order to post the entire content on our webpage at www.imasportsphile.com .....where we currently have posted 500 hrs. (1700 videos)....so we have a long way to go....and the fact remains that we do not know what is on the next cassette in the next box until we pull it out of the box and dust it off and put it in the process for posting..... so, stay tuned. Although we weren't around back in the day when this library was recorded.....while considering what we have learned about the library to this point.....is that if one part of the televised program was recorded.....then probably the entire event was also recorded....and in this case, we hope so.... therefore, we recommend you click on our site right now and bookmark it....cuz we have 100 different utube accounts under different names that we use as "video weight stations" waiting to be posted on our site.... so you are sure to miss some real "nuggets of gold" from our treasure chest of "memories" if you do not bookmark us and return often.

Nancy Thies, a member of the 1972 Olympic team. Trivia: She's the first gymnast to perform a back tuck on the balance beam in Olympic competition. Yes, even before Olga. She did it in the team event (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5_MhpmYqZKFlZY), and the US performed before the Soviets, so beat her by a few hours. She was always very modest about it. Unlike Olga, who did the tuck and immediately dismounted with a front flip, Thies did the back tuck mid-routine, which some argued was more risky. Fact is, both were impressive and groundbreaking for the time.
