Getting rid of some fat in sports that involve flexibility is often necessary though. Contortion is way harder with fat on the way. A gymnast or dancer that actually pursues professionalism knows more clearly than anyone that starving will only hinder performance, that's why surgery to get rid of localized fat is a reasonable thing to do. It's not about just being thin and bodyshaming -a ballerina that struggles with localized fat

No one gave her the wrong meds on purpose. Simona Amanar had the exact same amount in her system, but body height and weight, and obviously metabolism played into it and she was fine. Sadly Andreea was not. There was no big conspiracy. It was a mistake by the coach who gave them the medication. Pseudoephedrine is a stimulant drug. It is in the same class of drugs as stimulants like amphetamines and phenethylamines. When used at lower dosages, it acts as a decongestant. It is a highly abusive drug because it's stimulant properties are released when you take higher doses, which increases and enhances both mental and physical functioning. It is also used as a precursor in the manufacturing of methamphetamines. It's history of abuse has caused the FDA to change it from an over the counter drug to a controlled behind the counter drug.

Simone Biles has an exemption that permits her to take Ritalin, a proper stimulant that absolutely improves stamina and concentration, yet Raducan is stripped of a gold medal for traces amounts of a substance that, as printed on the label of drugs that contain it, can make you dizzy (so don't take it when you operate heavy machinery, compete in the Olympics etc)

@@shelley2he844 Also, for someone who apparently suffers from mental illness, how can you suggest that a gymnast shouldn't be allowed to receive medication for a mental health disorder that will negatively affect their ability to preform while competing?? A doctor specifically diagnosed that medication to help combat the difficult symptoms she was facing that negatively impacted her life, and that other gymnasts didn't have to deal with. The whole point is that she doesn't receive an unfair advantage from taking her prescribed medication, because she has a disorder that causes her extra difficulty compared to other gymnasts/people, therefore the medication doesn't give her an unfair advantage, but instead just brings her up to the same level as everyone else. The fact that you think Simone received an unfair advantage for taking prescribed stimulant medication for her adhd shows that you don't understand how severely adhd can impact a person's ability to live their life and do the same things as everyone else. Adhd isn't just having a hard time paying attention or being really hyper or something, it's a complex disorder that alters brain function in the prefrontal cortex, which affects every aspect of a person's life. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for so, so much, and if yours isn't functioning correctly, then sometimes stimulant medication is the only thing that will allow you to overcome the symptoms enough to be able to keep a job and take care of yourself, much less to live a fulfilling life. Not that it matters, but Simone was on a low dose of the stimulant medication, and like I mentioned before, she got off of it 4+ years ago if I'm remembering correctly. Thankfully, she was able to find other ways to manage the symptoms, but had she not been able to get off the medication, then her success would still be just as valid.

Many brazilian athletes were on furosemide during that time, I remember also some swimmers like Cesar Cielo tested positive for it, I know it's not really a strong ped like other substances but it's a diuretic(acts as a masking agent) so you can't blame anyone for getting suspended but your coaches/team doctors.

A bit of misinformation: Pseudoephedrine is banned ONLY IN A HIGH DOSE. And that is why Raducan got stripped of her gold medal... It is actually not banned in a low dose. But due to the fact that she was short, the pill made it that the dose of PSE was too high. A teammate of hers got the same pill a day prior and nothing was out of order. And if you watch her interviews, she said that she was announced that she failed the test, but the committee failed to say for what. That is why she did poorly in the competition in the next days. At least that is her own interpretation of what happened.

The amount by which she exceeded the allowed amount was absolutely insignificant. According to the Romanian's team doctor is because she metabolized the medicine less well than expected. They may have taken a more sympathetic approach to ADHD meds in the 2010's than they did in 2000's. I do think there's probably grey area here, as I don't imagine it would be that difficult for a lot of people to recieve an ADHD diagnosis if they were an elite athlete.... I am not suggesting this is the case for Simone, as I am sure it is not - for all I know she received her diagnosis very young. Meds like adderall certainly can keep you going longer, but if you do not need the pill it will cause you to crash and have negative side effects. I am not sure such medications would really improve performance, but at the same time you can see why its status as a stimulant would raise eyebrows by some. Russia surely does have a serious doping problem, but I always thought the meldonium controversy was a bit overblown. So I can see why a Russian gymnast who once took some weird old soviet heart medication that may not have any performance enhancing properties, would look sideways at a gymnast being allowed stimulants. I am not saying it's wrong for athletes with ADHD to take such meds, I just see how from another's perpective that could see a bit of a double standard.

Does the anti-doping system take into consideration how much of the substance is detected? Or does it just detect the presence of it? I feel like athletes shouldn't be found guilty unless the banned substance exceeded a certain amount that it was able to have significant effects on the athlete's body. I remember seeing Australian swimmer Shayna Jack's case where she accidentally ingested a banned substance, she was banned for 2 years even though it was later proven that the amount was so minute that it had zero effect on her body. If the system only checks for even a minute presence of banned substances, athletes being careful of what they consume is not enough, they have to hope that there are absolutely no cross contamination, which is out of their control

How hypocrite for the federation to give free pass for estimulant drugs like METHYLPHENIDATE, wich Simon Biles was taking without announcing it, it gives a clear advange for this stressing and concentration demading discipline. Legal drugs? bollocks!!

When you have ADHD, this drug slows your brain down. It definitely has nothing to do with balancing and muscles. You act like she was playing chess. Coffee has the same damn affect on a lower scale. You must watch Fox News.

You're right. At least 3 equipment fails, athletes complained about the floor being too hard causing many to bounce out of bounds and out of control. At one point the handle on the pommel even came right off. Not to mention the vaultiing debacle. I imagine that was the reason we have the table now instead of the horse.

Can we talk about Simone Biles and her pills? Now I'm not saying that her world class unbeatable skills are down to prescription amphetamines (Ritalin), I'm just saying that the first occasion where she has to stop using them - because the drug is banned in Japan, she quits the competition. Now if weed is banned as it has PED effects, then stimulant pills like Ritalin and Adderall definitely match that description!
