I miss the Gyralites. They get your attention a lot better than strobes or ditch lights.

Superb photography, Ferro. Some of the scenes you have here, especially early in the video, look like something out of a classic Currier and Ives.

First time I saw the Gyralite in action was on MARC Kawasaki bi-level units very early in the mornings (and they would use them when they sound the bells and horns). Very mesmerizing, indeed!

Nice. We used to see them out here in the west on the SP.

Circular patterns are gyralights, Mars lights are figure-8 pattern. Well I also used to always think they were gyrating mars lights!

I used to live right by Metra tracks in Ravenswood. It was a lovely sound and sight.

Far superior to just a headlight with ditch lights
@FFred-us9tw3 жыл бұрын
Just a correction, you mention Gyralites coming about in the 70's. That is incorrect. Gyralites have been around since the late 40's. Mars lights operate in a "Figure 8" pattern while Gyralites operate in a circle.

I've never seen a engine with a Mars light and ditch lights.

That's a Gyralight, which is a circular motion, Marslight is a figure 8 motion.

Actually I have read that Mars Lights were created by the inventor of Mars candy or a relative of the inventor.
@Tolono4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The Mars Light was invented by Jeremiah Kennelly, a young fire truck driver in Chicago who was friends with Frank Mars (founder and owner of the Mars Candy Company). Kennelly attached a motor to his fire truck’s spotlight to make it more visible to traffic, and was persuaded by Frank Mars to mass produce it. The first lights were inscribed with the words “The Light From Mars” which had a double meaning. There are a few articles written about it and this one seems to have the most information: trainweb.org/gyra/history.htm#MARS

Why does Metra use them anyway? I was born in San Francisco where there’s a commuter rail service (Caltrain) with equipment built by the same manufacturer - they have the same gallery cars and locomotives that Metra does, but those trains do not have a Mars light or “graylight”
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
Metra uses them because they are very effective for grade crossing warning. Moving lights are detected much easier than the stationary ones. But these type of lights are all railroad specific. Some railroads prefer them, some don’t. Caltrain used them on their F40s for years.

Check your photos and historybooks Cole Allen as all new Caltrain locomotive and gallery car equipment at the start of (former SP Commutes) SF Peninsula service in 1985 had Gyralites!
