How would the math be affected if we didn’t neglect the vertical angular momentum component? If given enough time and assuming no friction, would the gyroscope eventually start moving in some other way?

Great question, will produce nutations. The math gets harder but still doable.

Thanks for an educational demonstration. Please consider the following thought experiment. Take a complete working bicycle wheel and remove the axle shaft and the rubber tyre. Change the profile of the rim to a flat circular ring. Mount on this new "rim" a number of caster wheels oriented so that after placing this assembly on a horizontal flat surface ("ground"), the bicycle wheel will rotate/spin. It will not rotate around a fixed point until sufficient mass is placed at the wheel hub. This mass is required to create a friction force between the caster wheels and the flat surface. There is something curious about the formulas that you correctly described. The torque magnitude can be found once we have the inertia of one caster wheel, periphery velocity of the bicycle wheel, and the ratio of diameters between the bicycle wheel and the caster wheel. Nothing else is seemingly required. Question: Assume that the L vector points radially outwards. This means that the bicycle wheel rotates clockwise when looking down on it. Where is the torque vector located? Hypothesis: The torque vector is located at the contact point of the caster wheel and the ground. It points out of the page. The existence of the torque vector depends on the caster wheels tilting towards the bicycle hub. If the caster wheels do not tilt, then there is no torque. This is because the center of mass of the caster wheel is directly above the its contact point on the ground. If they tilt, tI see only two possible answers for the length of the torque moment arm. Either: 1) From the contact point on the ground to the caster wheel axle center or 2) it is only the width of the Hertzian contact patch. thanks. Paul

Interesting thought experiment. Question: Regardless of where the torque is measured from, where is the torque distributed to? Through the base of the casters, downwards into the ground? Or is it angular force through the axis of the caster wheels themselves?

Okay but what can we do at non approximated situation? Can we derive all angular momentum vectors and equalize them to torque vector?

In what cases do we consider the moment due to wheels mass about its CG ( = mg*rcos_theta) and not mgd?

So! If I had an electric motor with 2 shafts coming out either end, and flywheels weighing 40 grams each attached to each end... Let’s say they’re spinning at an rpm of 1000, and they are at a distance of 3 inches from each other… if I have that puppy in a rigid frame, and try to twist it against it’s precision at a speed of say 20 rpm. What force would I be fighting?

Can I ask a question which I cannot answer if a gyroscope lets suggest the front wheel of a motorcycle is slowed ie braking will that influence the lean angle of the motorcycle that has been created when cornering so if I brake hard on my motorcycle whilst leaning will the bike stand up more vertically because of the change of speed of the Spinning front wheel and if not or if so in layman's terms which you are good at WHY?? thanks

First thank you,and I'm afraid to say the movement of the Gyroscope caused by gravity:taobar=Mg*d*delt(t).

I think l have a good question, if I had a ball of extreme density and somehow hollowed out the inside to replicate the shape of the gyroscope and somehow keep it in tact at the same time, could that be a viable component for certain tech like vehicles?
