WORDS OF CAUTION FOR LEARNERS - I am an Auto Body Painter, repairing and painting cars for 42 years. My words of cautions of all you learners is this: If the space you are trying to parallel park into, is not big enough, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PARK IN IT. If you scratch the Bumper of the car in front of you, that car might be able to video record your license plate and depending on what car bumper you scratched, you could be liable for $1000's in repairs, bills or lawsuits. I have painted 100's of such scratched bumpers. Look for another better and safer parking spot, even if you have to walk more or pay for parking. But its still good to learn to parallel park, as long as the risk is low. If you have a passenger in your car, send the passenger to check the spacings in the front and rear, as you park. Remember, if you scratch or hit the car in front or behind you, you will be liable for fixing the cars you scratched, and now your bumper is scratched up as well. Besides, the cheapest Mobile Car touch up repairs can cost you about $300, in a Body Shop that cost you about $800 to $1500. And if the owner is very fussy and picky, he might also demand that you pay through your insurance, which can screw you up, and he or she might want to take his car to a Very Good Body Shop. Also if you have successfully parked, IF POSSIBLE, leave a bigger space between your car and the car in front of you, as this space if crucial when you are moving out of the parking space. But that depends if the original cars in front and behind you, have changed. Hope I have not scared you Learners too much. Better be safe than sorry. Good luck.

My grandpa told me that back in the 40s an 50s when he was taking his driver's test, his instructor said the reason they called it a bumper was because you could carefully bump into someone's bumper when parallel parking. It was a way too gage if you were too close when straighting up because everything was made of steel and iron. You do that now days, and the car will pretty much fall to pieces for how badly made they are.

This vid is for if there is a lot of space to park. When the parking spot is 'tight' (which is more common here in the netherlands) you can start to turn in when your side mirrors pass the bumper of the car instead passing the car fully before turning in like it's stated in the video.

Can I just turn in when my side mirrors pass the bumper of the car all the time then? Like no matter what space big or small if I just turn in the once the side mirrors pass the bumper will there be less room for error considering the steps before hand are correct? I know this is late but if you can reply it will help a lot.
@martheunen24 күн бұрын
@sinistershak5208 The short answer is yes, you can always use that method. It can make the second turn to straighten your car out again a bit trickier though. Especially if the distance between the 2 vehicles (when side by side) is too small. Occasionally I myself even mess that up, meaning I then can't do the second turn to straighten out, because my back wheels already hit the curb or my vehicles angle won't allowed me to continue for I would hit the other car. Just practice with some soft plastic traffic cone like things and get comfortable with your vehicles handeling and turning radius. Ps. Didn't mean to come off as preach. Hope this helps
@cloudshifter Жыл бұрын
A good tip is also to stop a little forward instead of parallel to the parked car so you can start adjusting your steering wheel torwards the parked car a bit so your car enters slightly diagonally in. That way it can even park with a single reverse if all the rest of the steps are done correctly.
@Pose.mp38 ай бұрын
Great tip. Though if you are to choose this method (dependent on size/length of your car) the steering wheel 8 times out of 10 shouldn’t be turned all the way, only half way.

THANK YOUUUUUUUUU! 😱 I've been driving since 1996 and in 2023, I still don't know how to parallel park!!! 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦 I am so embarrassed everytime I try to park in my neighborhood bc in that moment, I just know (well, I imagine)that a neighbor somewhere is looking out of their window cracking up at me, likely saying " when is that woman gonna learn how to park." I imagine all kinds of thoughts in my head, I truly imagine most of neighbors just running to their windows at the same time, when I pull up to park, some of them even taking bets on how long it's going to take me.😫😫😫🤦. I don't like when people are only wanting to be nice and courteous and therefore will wait until I've parked before just going around me once they see my reverse signal, as I'm preparing to park. 😩😩😩 Their kindness only makes me nervous.😩 I need the entire street cleared and everyone inside when I park🤭😆😂😂 (though they're still watching me from inside of their home....in my head). 🤦 I'm always shooing people to go around me. 😩🤦🤦🤦🤦 I also very often keep circling our block trying to find the largest spot possible, so that I will not have to do any maneuvering. I'm so pathetic. I'm surprised no one has recorded me and sent my non parking self viral. 🤭🤭🤭 After taking my driver's test twice and failing bc I couldn't park, I was ELATED when I passed it the third time but, y'all, I know for absolute certain that the guy just passed me, I did not pass. 🤭 I guess he figured I could drive and eventually I would get the hang of parking. If only he could see me now. SO glad he let me go! 😳 THANK YOU, AGAIN!!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 PS and Update - 2024 I didn't take the test until VERY late in life bc I knew that I couldn't park. 😩 I don't know how it is now but back in the day, it was required that you pass both the driving (of course) *and* parking test. Hence, even if you passed the driving test, you still had to take the parking test as well. So, I was *given* a Pass.... though I was unable to park. I did pass the driving test, which is why I figure the gentleman just passed me altogether. Likely, he thought I would eventually get the parking down one day! Just FYI☺️ 😉😉 It's been a year and I literally keep this lesson in my ear when I park now. If you do it just as he instructs, you will become better and better and will gain so much confidence as you keep doing exactly as instructed! I promise you!! 👌 I've been doing my own lil shimmy dance, before getting out of my car, as I park now bc I'm so proud of me! 🤭😆😄 Great lesson that you'll never forget! 👌😉

also a possibility, but I learned a simpler and faster variant back in 1990: The beginning is the same, but you don't look at the license plate but at the curb. As soon as this is visible, the steering wheel is turned completely and at the same time you continue to drive backwards. as soon as you are parallel to the sidewalk, you look to see if you are already in the middle, otherwise you adjust.

Slightly different version: At Step 2, rather than both bumpers inline, reverse the car a little so that the top of your back seat lines up with rear bumper bar of car next to you. Then reverse and continuously turn the wheel whilst looking in drivers door mirror until you see the headlight on passenger side of car behind you. Then as you turn the wheel back to centre position, reverse straight till the bottom of your windscreen lines up with the rear bumper bar of the car in front. At this point, you'll be on a 45 degree angle. Reverse some more whilst turning the wheel anti-clockwise direction so the car will nicely slot into the parking spot. Straighten up if need be. It looks complicated but it works. Note: wont work on two-seater cars.

I also had to do this to pass my driving test 40 years ago. I don't think I've done it more than once or twice since. I don't think it's even included in the driving test anymore. Get into such situations quite frequently, but avoid parking and move ahead, let me try this next time. One question, can we really judge our car align to front car bumper, not sure

I have a much better way than what's on this video. 1- keep you car as close to the car in front as safe and align the back wheel with the rear bumper of the front car. 2 - Back in at a 30/60 degree angle towards the spot. When the driver's side taillight is at the same line as the car behind you drivers headlight start the turn into the spot to straighten the car out. This works every time.

Yeah, that’s not better nor more helpful when there are exact movements and measurements formulate for every spot, every time. Seems much less precise since you’re guessing at angles, but you do you…

Absolutely correct. This 2 foot lateral distance away from the car in front is a recipe for failure -- it's all in the geometry. Parallel parking when there is plenty of space behind the car behind which you are parking is a breeze and no special technique is required. But backing into a "tight" spot is the acid test and the only way to do that in a limited number of steps is to start off as close to side of car behind which you wish to park.
