The funny thing is how the Republican and Democratic parties have coalesced with such extraordinary enthusiasm around candidates that most of the leaders, the media, and stakeholders had been saying privately-and some publicly-that they strongly opposed. The hypocrisy in high-level politics is evident. While they don’t reflect how people think about the candidates, they help explain why so many American citizens are fed up and think the political system is broken.

Ian Bremmer's Quick Take:
A Quick Take to kick off your week. Today the Democratic National Convention kicks off. The second of the big party conventions. We are waist deep, neck deep in the US electoral cycle at this point, and, you know, the funny thing is how both of these parties have coalesced with such extraordinary enthusiasm around candidates that most of the leaders, and when I say the leaders I mean the party elites, I mean the leaders in Congress, I mean the donors, and I mean the media, had been saying privately, and some publicly, that they strongly opposed.
So the hypocrisy in the system at the high levels is very apparent. And you know I think it's worth talking about both of these because it doesn't reflect the way the people think about the candidates but it does help to explain why so many American citizens are fed up and think the political system is broken. On the GOP side, of course, the Republican Party has lost three electoral cycles with Trump on top. They have privately said that they wanted anyone else but Trump. They'd back anyone else that was big, big money behind DeSantis and behind Nikki Haley and anyone else they could find. And you had J.D. Vance, who was saying that Trump was an opioid for the masses until he got addicted himself.

Bremer Doctrine: HIndsite is not 20/20. Don't berate the Dems for showing some semblence of loyalty but applaude them for being flexible to see how important Harris is to this country. Don't equate the cultist loyalty with the Democratic elites falling in line with the populism of Kamala. They are completely different. Apples and Oranges as always. Please however point out if the Democratic Party moves in the direction of cultism -- this is the reason for the media and your balance.

I'm from Europe and from afar this looks like Biden had an old-man's stubborness, and the party begrudgingly suported him. After the debate, that stubborness was broken and the party switched to their vice-president. Harris doesn't seem to have done anything of significance. I agree with Ian on hypocrisy. The Next decade would see US bases getting fewer in numbers as countries in the Global South ask the US to leave. It'd be a slow process till it becomes an electoral issue with politicians joining the contention promising to wind up US bases in far off regions difficult to justify. Ultimately China would like to see US troops off from both South Korea and Japan . If that Giant keeps on growing it'd become increasingly difficult for the Koreans . As Japan grows in military power it'd be relatively easier to fan up the nationalistic tropes. After all Japan is Japan .

The majority wants neither. This is why most consequential economic choices seem to be off the table in political rhetoric. The US housing market is propped up by a culture of localities designing policy over increasing their land values. This is a consequence of both an overrepresentation of property owners at this level, and the taxation mechanisms of local government. (Property taxes.) Both parties are, in practice, in favor of bailing this system out, and the inequality, debt burdens on working families, and failure to invest in the next generation that it represents.
@JumpingJack79

@@hipotalamus "Want neither" does not imply "want RFK". RFK is crazy, plus he can't get any meaningful amount of vote. Even Arab leaders in the past have made a point that there is no such peoples or place of Palestine as it only existed since the 1947 British mandate. You accuse Israel wrongly of attempting to commit genocide which in my view is a slander, and even if Israel had that in mind there is no distinct culture or race to commit genocide on, genocide would be Israel attempting to exterminate the whole Arab Muslim population which is ridiculous.
