Maha Ouparaj Phetcharaj was one very important statesman of Laos. He was born in 1890 just 3 years before France officially became the occupier of Laos. He grew up and was educated under the French rule. He was a smart and intelligent student. The Occupiers were impressed by his abilities so they sent him to France so he could complete his education. The French administrator was hoping that he could be used to help running the country under the French system. At first, he did work for the French as the prime minister of Laos. But his resentments grew over years of unjust treatment on Lao people by the Occupiers. So in the mid-1930's, he formed an anti-French movement called "Lao Isara". He mobilised people to take up arms against the Occupiers. But his uprising was unsuccessful and so he, along with many of his friends including his two half brothers; Chao Souvannapouma and Chao Soupanouvong; had to escape over to Thailand (Siam). He remained in Thailand for many years where he married a Thai wife. He and his soldiers continued their fight against the French until the start of WW 2 when the Japanese came and replaced the French. At the end of WW 2, in 1946, he led the people of Laos and declared Independence but this was short-lived because the French came back to retake Laos. His small and ill-equipped army was no match for the more superior French soldiers. So he has to flee over to Thailand once again where he remained until the defeat of the French army at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. He was invited back to Laos in order to form a government for a newly independent Laos. Unfortunately, he did not live long enough to implement his many modern ideas. He suffered an illness and passed away in 1959 aged only 69 years. His courage against the French and the Japanese had earned him the respect and admiration of the Lao people. His name becomes a synonym for bravery and strength. He is also called "Iron Man of Laos".
