Typing is not a big thing in HIM but being a fast reader and a very detailed person are needed to do well in this field. HIM being a rewarding career is based on how you feel about it but I truly enjoy it. Job prospects and salary really depend on where you live and what the market is like in that area. Thanks for watching.

I also checked out UC's progression program but they are just very very expensive. I actually chose my program from the AHIMA website under the CAHIMA section. My progression is taking 2 years because I sat out a summer and I'm only taking 2 classes at a time. If you have the time to dedicate you can probably get it done quicker. Maybe 15-18 months...

I'm so happy to have come cross your video!!! You just helped me to make the right choice...I will b enrolling in school soon! Also I'm so glad that mentioned the schools that are not credited, I almost made the mistake of enrolling in one of them.

@pinkdes2ny I realize I'm late to the party LOL, but I'm curious what it is about HIM that you couldn't tolerate any longer? Also, you mention in this video that you had to pay a lot of money to AHIMA to renew your license, how much if I can ask? Thanks a LOT.

I do not encourage anyone to attend a program that is not certified/accredited because your degree would be worthless. I have a friend that is the program director of Polk Community College and I believe they have an online program. You might want to look into it.

No, I've never worked as a MOA. I have studied for the CCS exam to have in addition to my RHIT. I'm also bridging into my BS/HIM but I haven't decided if I'm going to sit for the RHIA. My super busy at my job and once my EHR implementation is over I'll probably take the CCS exam.

@MeekInWisdom, I do have the option of working from home in my career field and I will actual being that towards the end of the year. Our hospital just went completely electronic and once the kinks are sorted through then we'll all transition home. So, I will be taking advantage of that option. When I made this video I was a director of an HIM department and didn't have that type of option. Thanks for watching and thanks for the conversation.

You could get your bachelors in anything you choose and my only suggestion would be to consider what your end goal is for your career and move in that direction.

HIM stands from Health Information Management and if you're interested in the field please go to AHIMA's website and look around, it's very informative.

I can't really tell you what's best for you. I just tell ANYONE to please do the research before entering the program of your choice. Truly, HIM has so many opportunities that the options are great. Good luck.

On average, how long is the RHIT-RHIA bridge program? I am looking at the University of Cincinnati's online RHIA program. Do you know how long a program like that would last? Thanks for these videos, you have been such a big help.

Thanks for your reply. I did check back with my schools website and it does say that it is currently in the candidacy status of accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). I will definitely look more into it before I finalize my decision.

@blummerlo Being a fast typer has nothing to do with coding. Being a fast reader is a plus. Billing is not the same as coding. It hate that those commercials make people think that they are the same but they aren't.

@cwoods871 It wasn't hard to get into the program but I believe some requirements have changed since I was in. Just check the requirements for the school you're interested in. Some classes are harder than others but getting a education in anything can be hard. You just have to study and learn what's taught. That goes for math majors, science majors and history majors all the same.

@MeekInWisdom I answered the comment on the wrong page. Please inbox me through YT and let me know what program you're in and I'll check the AHIMA website. It might already be an CAHIMA approved school. Also, you can ask your program director if it is a CAHIMA program.

I like to say I love your videos they are very informative about coders, I am a student and I took a course a couple of years ago a home school course and know I'm taking a course over again to be a coder, I was interested how do you get into the ccs program. Secondly I work in a hospital and I know a couple of coders how could I use this to my advantage if possible. Thanks so much keep up the great videos

No, in no way do I think that this field will disappear due to advancing technology. That's all the more reason for continued growth in the field. HIM, as a specific/credentialed occupation has been around since 1928. Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since then and we have remained and I think we will continue to do so. I'm not concerned at all. Functionality my change but the need will remain.

@no1stunnindiva If you don't have any coding experience then I suggest taking an AHIMA approved coding course and then you might be comfortable for the CCA. The CCS is for someone who already knows how to code and has some experience and seeks the specialist credential. If you want anything higher than that then you'll need to go to school for the A.S or B.S. I hope that helps.

I would suggest the associate's program as a stepping stone and then, if you want, move to the bachelors. But you can do just fine career wise and salary wise with just the associates.

I am not familiar with Career Step so I can't comment on it. If you are looking for a certified program please check out AHIMA's website and go under the schools section and look for a program in your area.

Hello. Thanks for the wonderful information. I'd like to know if I am taking courses right now for HIT and the same classes that I am taking for this course has the same classes for the regular Medical Coding curriculum but has extra because it's an associates program, can I still go to AHIMA to get credentialed? I have to take the same courses, but there is just a bit more classes than the MC program.

Hello, first off, great info and advice. I just wanted to ask if it is better to go for an associates or a bachelors in HIT? If I go for a bachelors will I gain an upper hand having a RHIA credentials rather than just RHIT?

@cwoods871 It was better for me because of my desires and what I know I can and can not tolerate. That type of choice is an independent choice for everyone. In my area coders and nurses can make similar salaries. In administration positions I see some from $45,000 to $130,000. Just research your market area.

I do know someone that attends the Midline Community College HIT program online and it's okay. I have issue w/ some of the coding instructors but she's doing well. I also have another student that I mentor that attends Louisiana Tech online and they have an associates and a bachelors option. I don't have other contacts with online programs. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Very helpful video. Graduated in 2003 with my AAS in HIT, didn't sit for the exam. Would you sit for the current RHIT exam, or study to become an RHIA? My passion was coding but, no one would hire me w/o exp. I've worked as an HIM supervisor before graduation.

I have a question. I go to seminole state college of florida & i want to get my associates degree in HIM. But i went to ahima.org & for some reason, only the certificate program is accredited for my school, NOT the associate degree program. Do you think i should continue pursuing my associates even tho it isnt certified by ahima?

I'm sorry that you are having a hard time in the field and I hope it gets better for you but your level of degree or credentials have nothing to do with not getting a job. I've worked in places that are full of different level HIM professionals and people that have Heatlhcare Admin degrees. AHIMA is not a scam and you really shouldnt' bad mouth an establishment because of your circumstances. I hope it gets better for you.
