Thank you for the great videos on this topic! I'd like to share my experience from a trip I recently took to China; I returned in July. Before my trip, I set up Alipay and WeChat Pay and linked a US credit card as a payment method in both apps. A relative of mine was able to transfer some money to my accounts, a couple thousand dollars, which acted as wallet money. I was able to use Alipay and WeChat Pay to pay merchants in China, but neither worked in Hong Kong or Macau. Depending on the payment amount, I used my linked credit card when the amount was less than 200 Yuan; otherwise, I used wallet money. I was also able to use Alipay to book train tickets for traveling within China, which was quite convenient. I could get through train station gates by scanning my US passport, which was linked to the Trip.com app within Alipay. DiDi worked well within WeChat. Overall, I found myself using WeChat Pay more than Alipay; both were easy to use. Regarding VPN, I used VPN Unlimited without any issues. @freelikewind have a nice trip!

Alipay and WeChat Pay won't work in Hong Kong and Macau. Whether you or the merchant tries to scan, you will get a system error. My guess is that the backend payment authentication system differs between Mainland China and these other regions. I have a debit and credit card with no foreign transaction fees, which I used to withdraw money from ATMs. ATMs are easy to find in Hong Kong, especially near or in subway stations. I ended up getting an Octopus card in Hong Kong for payments and transportation. It costs HK$50 to get the Octopus card, and you will a refund (minus HK$11 ) when you return the card at the airport at the end of your trip. Or you could keep it; I think it becomes inactive after three years of no usage. You would need to reactivate the physical card at a counter when you get a chance; I'm not sure about inactivity fees. I chose to get a refund. Yes, you can use your credit card in Hong Kong and Macau. Certain (smaller) merchants allow you to use it only if the purchase exceeds a specific amount. This varies by merchant, and some shops don't accept foreign cards at all. I have KeepSolid VPN Unlimited for life, which I paid around $35 USD for. It was from a promotion many years ago.
