Today this song is among the most famous Danish Christmas Carols, and most current Danes likely equate it with family, celebration and Christmas gifts. However, the song has other elements too and is written from a specific historical, political viewpoint.
Written by Peter Fabor in 1847 and highly influenced by the constitutional conflict at the time which would erupt in 1848 as the First Schleswig War (en.wikipedia.o.... Peter Fabor belonged, as with most of the bourgeoisie at the time, to the ideology that is now referred to "national liberal," a now-defunct political movement which contained elements of both nationalism and classical liberalism. In the song, we see many of the themes of this ideology; patriotism, capitalism, family values, etc.
Musically it was initially song on ”Kommer, hvo som komme vil”, also known as ”I en kælder sort som kul”.
