Händel wrote the basic melody which the Norwegian violinist Halvorsen (who died 1935, nearly 200 years after Händel) used for his short par force ride. This passacaglia is a well-known piece as it is often heard as an encore (two violins, violin and cello). The term literally means passing or strolling the street(s). For its typical triple meter it's very danceable which is supported by the basso continuo (another feature). In this case you have to pay attention to not stumble over your feet due to the playfully wild passages. To my taste this is treated like a contemporary song with exuberant moments (= lack of classical pathos). Formidable!
