On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of George Frideric Handel’s death, two of the world’s leading baroque orchestras and conductor Howard Arman honour the composer by playing the repertoire of the historic Handel Commemoration Concert which took place in London’s Westminster Abbey 25 years after Handel’s death. This outstanding British-German performance in Handel’s baptistery, the Market Church in Halle, represents the media highlight of the Handel Year 2009.

Handel never lost his flair for drama, even after he had to switch from operas in the Italian style to oratorio (much cheaper!). "Israel in Egypt" was the first oratorio, and it has a wonderful chain of choruses, ending with this pile driver of a chorus. Brilliant! They really don't make them like that any more (sadly)

Israel in Egypt was composed in 1739. Handel before that composed several other oratorios such as Brockes Passion, Esther, Alexander's Feast, Deborah, Athalia, Saul.

I love this tempo. I've seen some slower versions and definitively this sounds better. Recitatives beautifully sung as well.
