I know this was made quite a while ago, but I just wanted to say that this story is one of my favorite from Lovecraft, and you adapted it perfectly! The stop-motion puppetry is something that I never even considered before, and it works so well! I always liked how the Earthen Gods couldn't keep an old man from finding them at the top of a mountain, and had to tell on him to Nyarlathotep and Friends.

Thank you :) I am, of course, dedicated to the craft of stop-motion, simply because I just like the look and feel of it. But I also think that it can be used as a great tool for both telling stories and achieving atmosphere.

I don't know what to say. It was clearly done on a little budget but it was so high concept and the pacing, puppets and dialogue were fantastic. This was an incredibly faithful film to Lovecraft's writing. It is startling that Hollywood has has a hundred years and has been largely unable to do justice to Lovecraft' and here somebody with a green screen and some animation skills totally nails the original story.
@TheLoneAnimator6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can only make an adaptation as you see it, and this is how I saw it. What I was hoping to capture was what fantasy was back in the days of Lovecraft, when the genre was still being molded, and was very influenced by the Orient. That vintage type of fantasy is almost forgotten today, but you can see snippets of it in the various comic and movie adaptations of the Conan stories. And I wanted to show that it can actually be done with virtually no money and with simple equipment. I'm glad you were entertained by it :)

You're pretty correct in your suggestions. I didn't really plan to make any definitive gods, but let's say these puppets could be either this one or that one. Yog -Sothoth is at 5:49 (in the background). The ones at 5:57 and 6:03 are generic eldritch monstrosities.

While your stop-motion is gorgeous (As always), I do wish you'd try to integrate the lighting on the actors with the lighting scheme of the green-screen backdrops a bit more naturaly-looking-ly, if you get what I mean.
@Titleknown9 жыл бұрын
Though, I will say, the lighting on the actors looks more natural near the end than in the beginning. Did you shoot this in order of plot and try and tinker with your techniques as you went along? Also, any chance of you ever trying to collaborate with Lee Hardcastle? I'd love to see you two try your hands at making a Harryhausen-type stop-motion feature-length creature-feature together!

@@TheLoneAnimator good point, though it can still be seen as a big inspiration for future creations

I liked It! I can see the effort put to It. Amatteur Acting is a difficult obstacle. Loved the stop-motion, well designed Other Gods

I like to imagine that the gods of Earth are only beautiful to us and the Outer gods find them repulsive and odd.

I'd say that was a logical assumption.

Great work! I always want to know what do "Gods of Earth" look like. I wonder if some of the gods from real world mythologies actually included as members of "God's of Earth". Put that aside, the original work gives me a vibe similar to Lord Dunsany's works, especially Gods of Pegana , albeit darker.

I'm glad you mention Lord Dunsany, because he's another of my favorite fantasists :)

I love your depiction of Nyarlathotep I've seen it around on the internet but the stop motion adds an entirely new layer to it.
@TheLoneAnimator7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think this avatar of Nyarlathotep actually first appeared either in a game or in a supplemental game book. Now it's so iconic, and I had to include it here :)

Nice version of Nyarlathotep in his Bloody Tongue guise! I always thought of the Gods of Earth as being humanoid - much like Zeus and co - but this works too, and it's great to see a different interpretation. There's a great contrast between the ethereal, radiant gods of Earth, and the more harshly defined Other Gods.
@TheLoneAnimator8 жыл бұрын
+Phil Smith My original plan was actually to have the Gods of the Earth as humanoids, but then I decided I wanted something much more abstract, but beautiful. The Other Gods were always going to be stop-motion monstrosities to totally set them apart. Glad you enjoyed it :)
