On the Glomma River in the city of Fredrikstad, there is a unique structure called the Hope Cathedral. The creators were inspired by the Norwegian Stave Churches and at the same time wanted to draw attention to the problem of ocean pollution with plastic.
Plastic from the ocean was recycled and used to build a roof of 300 square meters. The plastic has been cleaned, recycled, and transformed into colored roof tiles in over 50 different shades of color.
The church was built on a 120 square meter floating barge.
"Hope and the ocean belong to us all" is the motto of the creators of this unique object. The message is that everyone can turn evil into good and help the ocean by collecting and disposing of the garbage from its shores and maybe even by creating something beautiful!
The project began in 2018, and was completed and opened to visitors on June 5, 2021, on the Isegran island in the center of Fredrikstad.
