I worked with the refugees during the evacuation, they are good people. But many will struggle to integrate. Majority did not know any English or understand the use of Toilets. The children were so joyful even in such a hard situation, I cherish my time with them.

To be fair, Vietnam and Afghanistan were actually *polar opposite* of each other so once experience had little to do with another. Vietnam was a nationalistic, centralised ethnostate fighting with lots of weaponry and support. In contrast, Afghanistan was an extremely weak, ethnically divided nation that crumbled immediately upon the US invasion. In Vietnam, the US faced against the industrial might of the entire Eastern Bloc as the Soviets and China competed to see who could supply North Vietnam with the most stuff. It was what NATO is doing for Ukraine, but on steroids. The Taliban were not openly supported by any other world power. The Viet Cong insurgency was actually almost completely defeated by 1968, the "guerilla" part in Vietnam became irrelevant in the end years. The Taliban insurgency became the strongest in the end years. Saigon finally fell with a large-scale conventional invasion from North Vietnam. Kabul fell without even a proper battle to Taliban fighters wearing slippers. The two wars were different in virtually every aspect.

As an Afghan, I really enjoyed watching this. With all the humour and entertainment aside, it’s highly accurate and objective. If I had watched this a few years ago, I might’ve gotten offended. But as I’ve grown up, with the help of researching the internet and my family’s personal experiences, the real history of Afghanistan has become so clear. I only pray that more Afghans see this and stop being in denial and accept our unfortunate history, so we can learn from it and make change and improve the future. Afghanistan still has so much potential to be a thriving country but with tribalism and religious oppression currently it seems difficult to imagine.

What’s very interesting is that as opposed to many recently formed nation-states, Afghanistan is one country where it doesn’t seem like the people themselves even want to see it as an entity. What I mean is that the concept of nationalism seems to have never really taken root there, mainly because as far as I know there has never been any kind of historical root country of ‘Afghanistan’, and this is very evident in the decentralized, tribal structure of the population living there.

Thanks to the war in Afghanistan I realized that the problem is not the US military itself, but that its chain of command and post-conflict policies are so deficient that any military progress is submerged in a sea of bureaucracy. I know it doesn't have much to do with the Afghanistan issue, but I was curious about that detail.

Afghanistan is a mythical land which leaves you shattered but you will still remember it with a deep sorrowful heart; I left the country in 2022, and from the moment I entered the Airport, I was constantly crying. Those tears were definitely not because of my love towards the country, but it was all because of the broken heart and the hopelessness that it gave me; I simply hated the cursed land along with everything inside it. Even though I was born and raised there, I didn’t have an ounce of affection or sympathy towards her and I was cursing the land with tearful eyes while boarding the plane. It leaves you so much broken that you request from God to just obliterate the whole country so that the dark shadow won’t be around you anymore;… …Fast forward to now, it’s a totally new feeling; every single day I feel devastated by hearing the news about Afghanistan and I am just constantly thinking about her and I’m even feeling nostalgic about the vaguest stuff of the land. There are days when I wake up and I just feel like I’m in Kabul, on my bed, and any minute now my mother would be storming in and waking me up for school, and then when I look at the sky, I feel like yeah this is Kabul and you’re still a 17 year old and in 20-30 minutes you should be leaving home to go to school, but when I go to the window and look around, I realize that we’ve already left Kabul, and Kabul is no longer around me, it is only alive inside my heart, like an evil, but a beloved one;….

@@maddogbasil well the war between the US and Taliban ended with the 2019 Doha Agreeement.. So that is not really accurate to say. Sure the us backed government failed but it was a warlord state that didn't attend the talks. While taliban technically broke its promise to the US (with Pakistan's help) and launched its offensive early ( Specifically Bagram air base closed down and the US had no real way of stopping any attack from a threat ever again) but it made no such deal or promise with Kabul. And the paper soldiers that have been a problem in Afghanistan since 2004 finally revealed it's self to the world. And now we have taliban controlled government. As it was always going to eventually happen.

I agree. Haiti is a serious special case. They have good land, good geographic location and potential as a tourist hub and shipping ports, proximity to the USA. the only serious issue is their tendency for earthquakes but honestly the really should be doing better as a country. And I refuse to believe the lazy excuse of "slavery, exploitation, racism" etc. They have also received more financial aid than most countries in that region. Afghanistan first became a nation in 1747 under the rule of the ethnic Pashtun Ahmed Shah Durrani. In the 1890s Abd al-Rahman, emir of Kabul, conducted a series of military campaigns that resulted in the country's first centralized government. The Haraza tribes mounted fierce resistance against the Sunni al-Rahman, and he responded with oppression and violence toward the Shii Hazaras. Many Hazaras fled the country for Russia, India, and Iran, and those who remained were subjected to harsh taxation, religious persecution, and enslavement. To diminish the Hazaras' sense of independence, al-Rahman divided the Haz- arajat region into three provinces and granted rights over fertile pasturelands in the region to Pashtun tribes. He moved thousands of Haz- aras to Kabul, where they were forced to work as servants and indentured serfs.

As a second generation American Afghan, this video illustrated the recent history of Afghanistan’s struggles clearly. Tribal politics, geography and foreign countries and their interests..ahem Pakistan, Russia, Iran and the U.S have made it a recipe for disaster. I would say Despite these things Afghans have found a way to endure and I am hopeful for the future.

​@@markusmath3421 We have territorial disputes (water supply) with them. Also Iran has supported different armed groups in Afghanistan. Also not every Afghan hates Pakistan. We do hate their government. Pakistan has supported us during the Soviet Invasion. Millions of Afghans were given refuge in Pakistan. People from Pakistan even came to fight the Soviets back then. Moreover we have cultural ties with Pakistan.

People forget that Osama and other funders against the Soviets betrayed the west because of the US support for Israel bombings of Lebanon. He made a quote saying the IDF bombing of two towers inspired him to do 9/11. After all of that, he pretty much forgot anything about Afghanistan’s struggle for “independence” with the West vs communism and pursued a global Islamic jihad instead. I feel like it’s so early to try to oversimplify this conflict as it has just ended a year ago, but more studies will reveal how convoluted this Western expedition to Afghanistan was, how we stayed there for another 10 years to keep our lie to the Afghan people alive even though our main mission was done, killing more NATO troops and afghan people then 9/11 ever did.
