H10 Livestream: How I Collect - What Makes Five Watch Lovers Tick

What makes a great collection? We’ll sit down with noted watch collectors Grahame Fowler, Howie Kendrick, Aldis Hodge, Wei Koh, and Kevin Rose to tease this topic out and, hopefully, arrive at a something close to a definitive answer. Each of these gentlemen approaches his watch collecting from a slightly different angle, from Fowler, who loves vintage Rolex; to Hodge, who designs watches in his spare time and brings a creative perspective to the hobby; to Koh, who built a successful magazine around his interest; to Rose, whose passion for watches led him to found Watchville before joining HODINKEE in 2015. While each panel member’s collecting skews toward fine mechanical pieces, there’s considerable variance from collection to collection, leaving plenty of room for their own personalities to come through.

Collecting philosophy should be addressed as a component of HODINKEE. So many folks who can afford the big names choose not collect them as a personal conviction and personal consumer philosophy. There should be a lane for those who stay in the sub $1000.00 range not because of lack of funds but out of choice.

I don't mind the wearing two watches but you have to match with what you are wearing brown straps with a white blazer and black shirt????? These guys have great taste in watches but not in clothing. From times pieces to cologne to wardrobe I make sure it's top shelf. Wei Koh is a poor dresser the 70's coke dealer look is so done. No shade I like his collection he just doesn't dress to match it.

"Collectors" have more "project" and/or "parts" watches or cars or guns or whatever and that they "collected" to SAVE them and probably have more "sentimental value" to them than any of their "showpieces" and anybody who doesn't have any "projects" that are literally just "broken" and or "junk" piles of parts at the moment is not a "collector". He or she is a "speculator". Anybody can "collect" brand-new and/or "restored" and/or "mint condition" objects and call themselves a "collector" but if someone can look at their "collection" and not see "survivors" or "projects" and that "collection" is under "lock and key" and hidden away where even they have to have a "good reason" and some "spare time" to even get to it or see it, it's a "hoard" and ultimately the only thing truly "valuable" to them is that they can "afford" to "collect" something they obviously have no real use for.
