If your family died in a car crash (which would be devastating), you wouldn't say something like, "They all died within a year of each other." Even if you didn't want to get into details, you'd say something like, "They died in a tragic accident." Saying that it all happened "within a year" indicates that it happened at different times. I lost a few people in 2020 (as many of us did), but the deaths were spread apart and unrelated. To say "within a year" implies to me that they were spread out.

I bet that mf knows his native tongue, since I saw in his old facebook page that his family is leaving comments in tagalog. A disgrace! Internalised prejudice. I am married to a Filipino man and grew up around a lot of Filipinos and the colonial mindset is deeply ingrained in a lot of them to think being white or from the West in general is better than being Filipino. I remember this boy I went to school with told us he was half white half Cherokee (twilight era so native American fetishism was the rage) ... well months into the school year I bumped into his mum in the school parking lot. She was FULL BLOODED FILIPINA - when we confronted him he broke down. He said he didn't want people to assume his mum was a maid or mail order bride and they were poor because they werent. We were shocked and said we would never assume that because we were all attending an international private school 😭 literally can't attend that school if you don't have money. First time for us to learn about the stigmas faced by many Filipinos especially abroad. It was sad. He became more proud of his heritage after when we encouraged him to embrace it. A recent public example of this is the pretty little liars actress Shay Mitchell recently calling her mother "Spanish" in an interview rather than Filipina.... when her mother is ALSO a full blooded Filipina born and raised. I am from Fiji so I don't relate to this deep seeded shame over ones heritage - I'm very proud to be native Fijian. But yes this seems to be a common experience amongst the Filipino diaspora especially.
