His character clearly states he was sent to South Africa in 1978 and joined the SADF's 32 Battalion which fought in Angola til 1989. He used some South African slang throughout the film such as "doos", "munts" and "kaffer" which are all South African insults you can't get any more South African than that. While his character is Rhodesian he's heavily influenced by South Africans.

I am always thoroughly impressed by Leonardo DiCaprio's acting ability and the first time I watched this movie cemented that admiration. Although many argue his accent wasn't very well delivered, I think it is brilliant. This scene is my favourite because it digs deeper beneath the tough facade of Danny Archer and makes you realise that he too has been affected by the violence around him. I cry every time I watch this, partly because I am blown away by Leo and also because we can finally feel something for Danny apart from anger. I am only a teenager and I get jested at quite often by my friends for liking Leonardo DiCaprio but I can't help but be mesmerised by his brilliance. I applaud you, Mr DiCaprio, and may you keep making excellent movies.

I'll say this... My grandfather had this quote written down, (I didn't know that it was from this movie till now) to later we found it in his handwriting, was off of this movie. My Gpa was a Marine in Vietnam. After that war he definitely was not the same.. Coming from a 22 year old, that sentence I can relate more too now than I'd imagine what it'd be then. I have a special place for him in my heart.. He passed when I was 9 years old. His handwriting of this quote, now will forever live with me on my shoulder as his handwriting at the time of writing it. "Sometimes I wonder. Will God ever forgive us for what we've don to each other"...

Yup. My grandfather was a. 30 cal machine gunner at the battle of pork chop hill in Korea. He was 19 years old and his assistant was blown to smithereens right in front of him and he jumped in a shell hole and prayed to God that he would go to church every Sunday if he helped him make it home alive. We only know this because one day in the 80s my dad had just started dating my mom and his car broke down in their driveway in the pouring rain and my grandfather was drunk and was rambling about it to my father on the porch while he was waiting for a friend to pick him up. My grandfather never talked about the war and he gave away all his guns to his buddies when he came home. One thing we learned was that he kept his promise to his maker because that man walked a mile to church every Sunday until the day that he died in 2016.👍

Leonardo kills it of course, but the writing is so good. This is the beginning of the character arc that ties back to where the school teacher / pastor guy says, "We never know which path leads us back to God." My screenwriting teacher said the lead and love interest always have to have sex. Bullshit. Maddy taking Archer's hand was perfection. Sex would have ruined it.

Lived it. Fought in Angola with 32 Rhodesians and the 32 best ever soldiers ever. No glory just honest hard as hell Bush fighting. Never will their likes be seen again. The stink of battle, the fire. The pleasure of just a simple cup of coffee and a hot meal. Just being able to clean up, not stink like an animal, fresh oil to clean rifle. Sleep out of rain and mosquitoes. Know that you could sleep for more than 4 hours before going on guard duty. Not covering 20km every fucking day, no water.

I was in the Rhodesian army and I met an American tourist when I was based at Vic Falls. We danced and had dinner under the stars and laughed untl late at night and then we went back to her room. We spent a wonderful night together making love and holding each other. I managed to make contact on Facebook many years later and she admitted that apart from wanting to have sex she felt it would be good to comfort me, just as this scene from the movie depicts. A long, long time ago now but the memory is still powerful.

@@cncmne7404 That goes over the point: the apertheid system divides a society in two, where a minority controls a majority and keeps it down. Do you know why so many people shouted "freedom or death!" across the world and across history? It's a conclusion we should reach before it's too late and we are the ones shouting freedom or death at a regime oppressing us.
