Hey everyone!
Fernando Tatis Jr.'s suspension has changed everything for the Padres. As a result, Ha-Seong Kim will continue to be the starting shortstop. As a result, he has become more than ever for the team's success. While he struggled in his rookie season, he has improved quite a bit in 2022. This begs the question: what is Kim's full potential?

Shin-soo Choo and Ji-Man Choi were signed as international free agents straight out of high school in Korea and never played in KBO. I believe Byung-Ho Park (Twins) and Dae-Ho Lee (Mariners) were most recent batters who came from KBO. Shin-Soo Choo is playing in KBO now after wrapping up his career in MLB. Great content!!

Ha-Seong is stealth padres MVP. He is better defensive shortstop than Tatis, one of top SS in the league and when he using the whole field he is legit .280 + hitter and run producer. I think he got caught up in trying to hit homers early, opening up his front side to pull the ball. He hit a few but his average dropped. Watching him evolve and grow has been awesome.

Not mentioned in the video is that Kim was an integral reason for the production at the bottom of the Padres batting order which often seemed to be the only way the Padres won games late in the regular season and the post season. The top of the order was nearly a complete failure starting big innings although often participated in finishing off the big innings the bottom of the order started. In the Padres' desperate attempt to find a leadoff hitter, Kim was even swapped to the top of the order for one game with near disastrous results because neither Profar nor Kim were productive that game but when Kim was in the #6 or #7 spot he produced just enough along with timely hitting by teammates like Nola or Alfaro and Grisham to win big games late.

Good lesson here for the young people. People respect hard work, you will have a fulfilling life through hard work. Cheating and short cuts will produce only temporary benefits, for long term pain. Hard work is temporary pain for long term benefits. Life is full of paradoxes (which means a contradicting/absurd proposition that when investigated becomes true) in order to truly relax you must work hard, for you can not relax if you have nothing to compare it too... happiness only exists because of its opposite, sadness. Without sadness and suffering, we would not know what happiness is for we have nothing to compare it too. There is only light because of darkness... What I'm saying is, that the faster you accept that and use it for your advantage, the faster you will build a successful foundation of work ethic, morals, and principles that will give you a life full of purpose and fulfillment. You will not find this in hedonism, don't listen to rappers, ball players, pop stars, movie stars, politicians, or your teachers who will tell you that only through "finding your identity through exploration of your sexuality" will you be happy. Pride is a sin for a reason, another paradox. Why should it be bad to be prideful? Well, good question, ask God and you will find the answer, for it is in the Bible. And I'm an engineering, I am smarter than you, so don't say "well I believe in science not religion"... cuz I work in science, I know more about science in general and in specifics than most people, and I will tell you for 100% fact, there is only 1 God. He is good and benevolent. You do not have to subscribe to a religion to benefit from His power, all you need is a relationship. Pray to Jesus Christ, for through Him is the way to the Lord God. I'm not even saying you must go to Church, I do, I go to Mass because I'm Catholic, but people who tell you that God is not real, and to just believe in science... do not know anything about God or science and want you to be miserable and lost and confused just like they are. I once was that person... I was a drug addict, I was weak and scared and anxious ALL THE TIME. Only through the power and strength granted to me by the Lord was I able to turn my life around and find peace. I would love for everyone to do the same. Our society is very lost sadly. People like to pretend they aren't and will drown themselves in social media for validation. I no longer need validation, for I am walking the path Jesus has laid out for me. If that sounds good, cuz it is, pray. Ask God to show Himself, ask for sign, you will get one if you look, then after you know there is a God, build your relationship with Him. Ask how you may better do His will for you, and live right, reject this modernism of sex, drugs, gayness, confusion, exploration, pleasure... doesn't mean you HATE, it means you reject their claims of "this is how society should be" as a young man, you are the most important person in this country, for it will rest on your shoulders some day. Men are capable of GREAT things. Be a GREAT man, embrace masculinity, learn to control your emotions, learn to love responsibility, understand that you should NEVER let a woman make you feel small, never let someone shut you up, cuz good times create weak men, weak men create hard times, hard times create strong men, and strong men create good times. America will need you. Maybe this might reach that 1 young man. Good luck guys, I understand you are under attack right now... I am sorry that you have to go through that, but weak men created it... you MUST grow up strong in response. Don't let women tell you how a man should act... don't listen to men who are telling you to reject your manhood. Your manhood is yours for the taking, but if you miss it... you might be a male, but you aren't a man. There aren't many men out there... so find one, even if it's not your dad, and learn...

Machado’s OPS has been over 1.150 in the last 15 games, Soto at 0.949 since he joined the Padres, Kim with GG-level defense (If he didn’t play as a third base while Machado was out, he would have been leading most of the statistics) and above-average offense, particularly as a shortstop. (League SS average OPS+ is 90, while Kim is at 105) What I like about him is the fact that his stats are getting better and better. After firing April(0.271/0.364/0.563), he had bad two consecutive months, May (0.196/0.282/0.278) and June (0.232/0.327/0.295). But July and August - Man, he’s on fire. July (0.314/0.372/0.443) and August (0.310/0.344/0.483). His OPS is getting higher and higher every month, 0.815 in July and 0.827 in August.

OMG! Thrilled that this came up on my "KZbin recommendations" feed! Thanks for this video about Ha-Seong! First off, I'm a Dodgers fan to the core and every time I watch Kim play, in my mind, I was thinking "Is this guy some type of way underrated phenom that MLB is ignoring to bring into the public eye?" The guy is super fast, agile, alert and excellent reaction times from balls hit in his direction with a strong accurate canon arm that guns even the fastest players out at first. In other words, insane ability. At the plate, he's patient, yet aggressive -able to make solid contact more on a more consistent basis and is able to get on base. I'm not really into the long home run ball as much as I am for a player to do ANYTHING it takes to get on base(s) -including walks. In my book, that's a huge win, should a player manage to do that. At this point, I'm of a very strong opinion that Tatis Jr was a pretty big disappointment and words can't adequately express how irresponsible he was in making decisions that let his team down -given that he was expected to be the next team leader and captain (after Machado). Although Tatis putting himself in that position is very disappointing to any team and teammate are understandably upset, yet able to forgive him. I think that Tatis Jr should be WAY down on the totem pole: Meaning he should shut the f' up during all team meetings. What he has to say or any of his opinions expressed to teammates/management shouldn't be given tremendous weight (unless they are accurate and based on grounded logic) because he is no longer a veteran who has been in the battle trenches -where most of the team have to go on struggling with injuries and pain associated with the tremendous grind of MLB ball (travel, going place-to-place, getting setup, practice, video sessions, team meetings, physical (massage) therapy, weight training, diet, etc). Tatis Jr must earn his position and (for a man, most importantly the manly attribute called) "respect" -even with his over-the-top bloated salary. Yeah, life is not fair for Padres fan in that regard but such is life: Definitely, not fair. Ha Seong is the man though! I hope he stays at short stop and isn't replaced! Better yet: I hope that he expresses a desire to wear the blue and be with us -even if things work out with Trea Turner (which they most likely won't). Guaranteed that we have room for him!

Kim is a better fielder all around than Tatis, if Tatis had played in the Musgrove no hitter, it never would of happened. He makes too many throwing errors. Kim is a world class infielder and he can play other infield spots other than SS. He will come around on the batting side, it may not happen while he is with us. But, it will happen and no matter who Kim plays for. He has my support, he's amazing to watch. I was also at the Marlins game where he made that insane reaction to the ball hitting the 3rd base bag. I had a perfect view of the play, I could see right down the third base line and lost my mind. I've only ever seen someone do something like that maybe 4 times in my life. One of those other 3 was Ken Caminiti at third and some kid I played against in the AZ Fall league. Kims was the most impressive by far.

As a fellow padres fan I was waiting for this video. I expected it to be about Tatis, and for you to be as negative as I've been about it. Thanks for putting this positive spin on it instead. I'm excited to see what Kim can do now that his spot is secured. At one point this season he was dreadful to watch, but he's steadily bounced back from his sluggish performances and I'm stoked to see how he continues to improve. Amazing video and perspective SportStorm.

Kim is a great hitter. He didn't miss the opportunity when Tatis had a problem. What's really interesting is that the level of the league has increased, but the defense has improved. I'm a Dodgers fan, but as a Korean, I hope Kim continues to play well!

New face of the padres. We saw how it worked for the angels, they became one of, if not the most popular team in Japan. If the padres throw the same marketing behind Kim, it opens a whole new world of revenue.

As a South Korean, shit makes me tear up. Never is it easy for a KBO player to start in a playoff contender team like the Padres which is why Choo was basically considered a "God" in Korea since he barely showed any slump, a lot of lead off home runs, and more. Whenever Kim goes hitless, it feels like I gone hitless since he's the only Korean batter currently in the MLB who played in the KBO before. Really hope this is an opportunity for Kim to shine. He's got that talent.

Just a friendly suggestion. When chanting his name at games to make him feel more at home, say his name “Kim Ha Seong!” Instead of “Ha Seong Kim!”. In Korea the surname comes first. I’m sure he will love and appreciate it so much! 김하성 화이팅!

Giants fan that lives in San Diego. The Padres should put a mural of him in the community too like they have for Manny, Tatis, Musgrove, and Darvish. I say it should be close to a 99 Ranch or the Zion Market. I am also rooting for you to beat LA and I'm sorry we haven't done our part this year.

my dads family is from san diego so most baseball talks revolve around the friars. even being a dodger fan, i still find it fun to talk about the padres. we talked about the tatis situation, and we agreed that tatis should be dealt. keep kim, and get some prospects and Willson Contreas from CHC. that will set you up for a ring. tatis is good, but the off-field issues are a dealbreaker. thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Thx for this video which puts into numbers the improvements that are subjectively obvious on the field. BTW - If Kim is more acclimated to a Korean diet, someone should advise him or his shopper (assuming that he has hired someone to shop for him) to research the food in the Asian markets and restaurants in the Kearney Mesa/Convoy areas. I wouldn't know about the authenticity of restaurants, but generally they get good marks. But if he can find someone who can cook authentic Korean fooda(maybe even a relative?), there's no doubt anything and everything is available in the grocery stores.

There was a legitimate argument that Kim at SS was the core of the best Padres arrangement even *IF* Tatis didn't piss hot and came back. Tatis was already pretty bad there (important to note that "already bad" for a 20-22-y/o on defense is a baaaaad sign on future potential to stick at the position) and overdue for a position change. If Kim were a typical SS bat (~90% MLB average), he was by far the best candidate there for the Padres with Tatis shuffling around the OF and 2B. With Kim having adjusted to MLB and looking like a league-average bat (ie: a bit above the typical SS) plus elite glove at SS, the Padres have a borderline All-Star SS in him (see JP Crawford, Mariners and Jean Segura, Phillies). Tatis is definitely athletic enough to learn CF, but will actually need consistent reps there to see if he has the ability to read the ball well enough for it. The Padres gave him a handful of games in the OF last year, but that's the totality of his pro experience (per The Baseball Cube).
@Alieh86

My biggest argument for Tatis as a DH/OF is that it not as likely that he’s going to dive for multiple balls every game and cross your fingers that he won’t dislocate his shoulder. Kim isn’t as “Flashy”, but he’s got more than a few web gems and we don’t have to worry about him booting a grounder
@FlyingDwarfman
@FlyingDwarfman 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alieh86 Keeping him healthy -- most notably since he's now already suffered a serious injury (previous injury = most predictive trait of future injury) -- is a good argument, for sure, and I think the arguments together are very strong. Not only is Tatis' future health important, but there is also a likely better fit for the team at SS. It's all just a matter of where he can fit best; CF, COF or (in the "wait, how?" category of possibilities) will he just be primarily a DH.

Slot Tatis in at DH. If Grish plays half as well next year as he did this postseason and Kim keeps being Kim, I think having Tatis ride the pine for a while might give him some extra time to think about his choices. I'm a lifelong Padres fan btw
