For your knowledge, that is not self defence. He had the chance to run away when he picked the bottle. No law in any part of the world recognises that as self defence. Assuming there was no chance of running away and his life was endangered and he was able to pick bottle at that time to fight back, that is self defence. But according to his statement, he said he went out (first chance of escaping) and picked a bottle(second chance of escaping) and the boy was about to run away when he retaliated(third chance of escaping). This is the position of the law, he had three chances to escape but he wanted to retaliate, taking law into his own hand, that is not considered self defence in law
