HABBA KHATOON-The pyramid shaped mountain Habba Khatoon, originally called Zoon, was born in 1560. Zoon is Kashmiri synonym for moon. She was the most beautiful damsel of Saffron village "Pampore" who knew Holy Quran by heart at a very early age. She recited the Quranic verses in her sweet voice. The mystery, innocence, charm and attractiveness was re- splendent in her personally. By the time she had attained the age of twenty she had composed nearly 200 songs. She was a good singer and her musical voice had the quality of reviving the spirits of one and all. She got married to an ordinary peasant. The charisma of Zoon and rusticity of her husband sowed disharmony in marriage. In 1579, When the ruler of Kashmir, Yusuf Shah Chak was out hunting, he happened to pass across the place where Zoon was singing. On hearing her melancholic melodies he went to look for her. When he saw her he was stunned by her flawless beauty. Habba Khatoon and Yusuf Shah fell madly in love with each other. He got her divorced and took her to his palace. In 1579, when Akbar came into prominence in Delhi, he invited Yusuf Shah Chak, deceived him and arrested him. He was imprisoned in Bihar and Habba Khatoon thus got separated from Yusuf. Habba Khatoon was unable to bear the pain of continued separation thus lost her mental balance and become a recluse. She wandered on the banks of river Jhelum, field and valleys. She came to Gurez and lived in village Achhoora, situated in the shadow of a high conical mountain. In fits of in- sanity, she decided to climb this formidable mountain for greater solitude. She commenced her climb and carried along an earthen pot filled with water. She slipped and fell down the mountain. Habba Khatoon suc- cumbed to her injuries but from the place where the pot broke, a spring of crystal clear water erupted immediately. From that day onwards, the spring was known as Habba Khatoon Chasma or Dudi Chasma and the mountain too was christened as Habba Khatoon.
