After Del's sabotaged execution, the Warden comes down to berate them for the mess. While ranting about the problem, he mentions how the witnesses could hear Wild Bill singing about it. Paul asks him 'Can he carry a tune?' 'Carry a tune' is an old metaphor in the English language for someone being able to sing well. Paul asking the Warden this is a way of defusing his anger at the situation. This line is audacious and funny in this context... it shocks the Warden back into handling business rather than being angry. Fantastic Movie One of the greatest ever made.

I present Percy, the monster in front of the bars. An absolute loser, coward through and through, sociopath, psychopath, animal torturer, someone who delights in the suffering of others and even causes it (execution scene). Then the new job he wanted. Imagine this monster in humans, who cannot defend themselves and who are hardly believed when they say that they are being mistreated. And little Percy is always there. Yes, and that's what he is, but not in the way he wanted it to be. How long has John been living on his green mile? Decades, centuries or even millennia. how to live when all your friends die over and over again and you have no exit. I can very well understand his desire to leave. And only one person can decide that, you yourself, and nothing about it is reprehensible. The book and film are brilliant. The actors are absolutely top class.

But as a retired police officer from Berlin - Germany, in my 40 years of service, I have had to deal with "monsters". That wasn't fiction. I just see the book and film from a different perspective than others.

Not sure if you guys noticed but the one younger officer played the sniper in Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks. The person he went to see who had the little boy that got attacked by a dog - that was LT Dan from Forrest Gump. The man who played John Coffey was Michael Duncan Clark. Unfortunately, Michael is no longer with us. He died in 2012. This is gonna seem random but the scene after the rehearsal when they were sweeping the floors it reminded me of my grandfather's house. Houses in the south before air conditioning were built lifted from the ground around 2ft with paving stones or wooden posts and had large gaps in the floorboards to let air from under the house where it's a little cooler and drier to circulate through the house. This also meant sweeping was super easy because there was a half inch gap you could sweep all the dirt into and not have to collect and dump it. Just something interesting I noticed.

I'm 25 years familiar with the book and the movie. It took a long time to get beyond the devastating emotional impact well enough to observe a few things that are easy to miss. John is always obeyed. He's just so soft spoken and patient you don't even realize he's actually commanding the people around him. In the book Paul knows that Del is right and he shouldn't be getting too close to any cell, especially if no one is there to back him up. But the thought is far off and then drifts away. Later, he just blames it on the high fever he was running. When John makes up his mind to do something, no matter how much they may complain, no one makes a serious move to stop him. If he had wished to change the outcome of his trial, and just walked away from the whole situation, he could have done it. He would leave a lot of confused people behind who might not even remember John at all. Maybe that's happened before. It would explain why he has no back trail. 🧓🎭📽️💖

John Coffey was meant to symbolize the new messiah, the second coming of Jesus Christ. Hence the initials JC. Or a Christ-like character. I believe Stephen King confirmed this.

He was healer, but he found the girls too late which is why he cried. In context, racial issues were a VERY BIG DEAL in those time in the US, which is why poor Coffey was blamed for everything.

Michael Clark Duncan was 6' 5" and the camera angle made him look bigger. RIP Michael. He passed away at the age of 54. Percy suffers from "Short Man Syndrome". The people at the nursing home liked the movie so much because, at the time that movie was made, they were all young adults enjoying themselves at the movies.

The champ 1979 is a good one based on a true story if I remember right and has the saddest ending of all movies, the boy actor in it won a ton of acting awards for it. You'd also might enjoy miracle in cell number 7, there's a original Korean one and a turk one, both excellent and a true story

The singer Ronnie Atkins has been battling cancer the last few years, but is back to perform with the band, he has also released a very personal solo album. Personally i love his voice, switching between his hars voice and sometimes heartwrenchingly beautiful. Overall an amazing band.😊

John Coffey being heavy enough to squash the springs on the prison van is fiction. At the size they portray him, he would weigh 450 pounds sat MOST, and the truck is rated to carry 1500. John with all the guards wouldn't add up to enough weight. Steven King knows very little about motor vehicles.

It’s really not complicated, Percy deserved what he got 100%, not only for what he did to Dale, during his execution, but what he would have done to others in the future. Also, during this time period and the lack of rights for black people, there was nothing Paul of his men could do for John, to exonerate him.John knew that if he had Billy The Kid killed, he’d forfeit any chance if freedom.

Sadly, Black people were jailed for minor things to keep the free labor going… Now the jails in the south can only have people in jail do things for the local goverment like road cleaning/repair, litter pick up..

If you say so. I don't buy that for a second but you can think what you want. Neither John Coffey nor Jesus Christ were martyrs, as neither one died for their beliefs. According to the the Christian faith, Jesus was a sacrifice, substitutionary atonement to pay for the sins of the world. He wasn't killed for his beliefs, he was killed to create the very beliefs some have been martyred over. And John was wrongfully convicted and executed as a result. His beliefs had no part in any of it. I don't think you know what a martyr is if you think either are one. And you have no cause to say that John Coffey was an innocent either. Yeah he was a nice guy who did good things for people and seemed to be harmless in every way😊 but that in no way makes him an innocent or perfect or sinless. According to the Bible's writings, the purpose of jesus's life was to live without sin in order to become a perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world. Which is absolute nonsense of course but hey people have believed crazier things.

Actually, death by electrocution was considered humane compared to other forms such as hanging or firing squad. When done properly (?) the brain is dead before pain is perceived. Nothing alleviates the terror of walking that last “mile” or the waiting period. In my state we have no death penalty which eliminates wrongful convictions. Lethal injection has gone badly- appeals usually take 10 years - victims have no appeals.

Different states have different methods of execution. Firing squads were more of a thing in the western states like Utah. Firing squads consisted of 4 or 5 shooters. One rifle would contain a blank so that if somebody later had remorse theyay think maybe they had the blank cartridge. Sometimes, firing squads were guards and in some states volunteers from the public that were paid a small fee in some states.
