@browncoat697 Жыл бұрын
There was a Geneva Convention in place prior to WW1. The first was signed in 1864 and the second in 1907. They pertained primarily to the treatment of prisoners of war, and on the Western Front were _relatively_ well followed (oddly enough they were relatively well followed in WW2 on the Western Front at all, but in the east Germany obviously did not give a fuck about following them, though of course it didn't help that the USSR wasn't a signatory). I'd also note that the regulation on the use of chemical weapons and poison gas is not the Geneva Convention, but rather the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 - i.e., *also* before WW1. Both sides flagrantly violated the Hague Conventions, obviously - France technically employed chemical weapons first with the use of tear gas from basically the first day of the war, whereas Germany was the first to employ intentionally lethal chemical weapons with a massive chlorine gas attack in 1915 that blew a five kilometer wide hole in the British lines open, but it was not exploited by the Germans to restore the war of movement. Lastly, was WW1 Germany less morally compromised than WW2 Germany? Well, the bar is extremely low, so the answer is: yes, probably, but they're still not the good guys. The thing about WW1 is that *everyone* was the bad guy: Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary were ruled by autocratic monarchs; Germany, France, the UK, and Italy all held imperial/colonial possessions around the world that impoverished millions of people of color for the sake of enriching Europeans through resource extraction; and the US had its history of settler colonialism and genocide of Native Americans, plus during the war we committed a massive crime against free speech and democratic principles with the First Red Scare, imprisoning thousands of people and obliterating the labor movement for daring to speak out against the war. The UK and Germany also had histories of genocide in their imperial possessions overseas - the first concentration camps were constructed by the British during the Boer War. The only good guys were the anti-war activists in each country, but the only ones to succeed were the Bolsheviks in Russia, whose revolution successfully took Russia out of the war (a good thing!), but in the process resulted in a civil war as the White movement rose up in arms in opposition to the peace treaty (Brest-Litovsk) signed by the Bolsheviks that had resulted in gigantic concessions to Germany, including the creation of German puppet states in the Baltic, Belarus, and Ukraine.

To 2:55 yes, you’re not supporting Nazis, remember that UK and France both had more colonies at the time than Germany that they still heavily relied on for economical purposes and they were still at that time willing to expand their territories, the war between France and Germany was definitely inevitable at that point and back then it was still considered a natural way of resolving conflict that is making your right the only right and that’s because they didn’t yet have a Great War:)
