My Dad was deployed twice to Iraq and Kuwait. Those tours completely disillusioned him and had always maintained the stance that the best way to achieve peace in the Middle East would be to give everyone an AK and just let them sort themselves out. Whoever wins, wins, and that's who we will have to deal with. Whether as allies or enemies, it would at least hopefully introduce some long-term stability for that region.

There's some truth to that. A significant portion of the instability in the middle east is the legacy of the Sykes-Picot agreement. After WWI the UK and France didn't want to middle east to just unite into a new Ottoman empire, so they intentionally gerrymandered the new map to split the ethnic groups up across multiple countries and each country has multiple ethnic groups vying for control. It's a recipe for infighting and chaos, and it probably isn't going to get fixed in the long term until some borders get redrawn and maybe a country or two disappears.

Hi! Volcano nerd here! The volcano you're referring to is named Campi Fleigrei, which is Italian for Burning Fields. It is a large volcano, but it doesn't quite meet the "super" qualification. additionally, it is connected to vesuvius via deeper magma supply system, but the actual magma chambers that power eruptions are not the same chamber. Just as HLC has missile tism, i have volcano tism, so time for a high speed crash course. large volcanoes tend to form what are called Calderas. these form when so much material is ejected from the chamber at depth that the void left behind drags the ground down to fill it, creating a big hole. Like a *really* angry sinkhole. now obviously it takes pretty large eruptions for this to occur, but not as large as you might think. In the volcanology world, we have a scale called the Volcanic Explostivity Index, abbreviated VEI. each level is 10x larger than the last, and it goes 0-8, though some people give certain eruptions a 9 that is not an official part of the scale. Mt. St. Helens was a VEI 5. A 5 is equivilant to 1-10 cubic kilometers of material that was ejected explosively. Supervolcano, though the term is hated by the scientific community, generally refer to volcano that has hit VEI8, that is 1,000 cubic kilometers to our math averse friends. The list of active volcanoes that have done this is surprisingly long, but Campi Fleigrei isn't in the club. In the Naples region there are 3 active volcanoes, all of which have formed calderas. Of them, Vesivius is both the smallest and the most famous (generally smaller volcanoes recieve magma just as fast as the really big ones, it just comes out as more eruptions instead of larger ones.) The second, Ischia, is an island at far side of the gulf. it has gone caldera, and could do so again eventually, but isn't ready yet. it's eruption won't be as large as what campi can unleash, but tsunamis are, well, terrifying. Campi Fleigrei lies between these two and is the big boy. it has 2 largest eruptions 2 its name, though multiple "smaller" caldera forming eruptions from collapsing smaller, more transient magma bodies. the 2 largest were a higher end vei6, and a vei7. most smaller calderas in its history were a higher 5 or a low 6. Now, normally I hate going for fear mongering, but in this case i really have to emphasize this point. This volcano is ready for a full collapse, that is to say one of its large eruptions. Multiple large cities are in the way, and its large caldera forming eruptions are exceptionally violent, even in the class of eruptions this size. It's magma chamber is about 95% molten (think of a magma chamber more like a sponge than a big cavern), and the generally excepted melt percentage required for eruption is around 35%. There is more than enough melt down there to hit the VEI 7 threshold. Additionally, and now i'm going to get more in the weeds purely because I enjoy doing so, the last eruption of Campi formed a relatively small cone named Monte Nuovo (pretty sure that's literally just new mountain, great naming guys), formed in the 1850s. Based on the chemistry of the magma, we know that it lines up basically directly to what this volcano has done in its past immediately before going caldera. Immediately after the eruption of Monte Nuovo, another magma intrusion occurred. See, lowering pressure on things tends to also lower the melting point, which in this case now means more rock is above the melting point and therefore liquid. it also allows more gas to stop being dissolved raising the pressure back up. important to know that this process will initially overcompensate, causing a sharp pressure spike. this nearly caused a second eruption that would, most likely, have been the big one. it stalled (thankfully). That said, this volcano is absolutely still recieving a lot of magma, and the ground keeps lifting because of it. this unrest will, most likely, lead to another eruption, possibly in our lifetimes. Stalling is still a plausible outcome, but it's no longer safe to assume it's the outcome we're going to encounter, *and* we must now assume that any eruption it unleashes will be the big one. with this in mind, several very large cities are in harms way, the death toll would be several million, of not tens of millions, if proper and extensive evacuations are not undertaken the instant the run-up to an eruption is detected. It is, without question, one of the two most terrifying volcanoes on the planet. The other is Iwo Jima, or Ioto as it's named now. Yes, *that* Iwo Jima. It is also a vei 7 capable volcano that is quite at risk of pulling its next big one in our lifetimes (though it probably just pulled its monte nuovo, so maybe more likely next generation or two), and its main hazard would be positively wrecking japan with giant tsunami. Okay, so that wasn't actually a fast crash course. I'm autistic *and* adhd, cut me some slack. thanks for reading though if you managed to get through all that!

I have nightmares about the decision to cancel the Raptor program at 40% of what it could have been. Edit: as someone in the comments pointed out, my numbers were incorrect. It's actually only 25%. We have 187 and were supposed to get 750. My anguish has only intensified. Stupid Commie politicians.

School should take a page out of HLC handbook for sure. No narrative to fit in for predicted outcomes. Just tell kids the truth for once I promise you they can handle it as well as formulate their own ideas for making things better. Kinda hard to do when they are told sugar coated edited versions of events always painting their world with rainbows and puppy dogs. When they learn the truth later they end up with fuck the patriarchy ideals and who can blame them? We should work harder to set them up for success not coddle them from the evil world. If they already expect things not to be perfect they are more apt to work for a better way…..just my thoughts on things We don’t give our kids enough credit They are capable of far more than they are allowed

HLC ... you're only just now learning about the Campi Flegrei super volcano? The thing includes the Phlegraean Fields west of Naples and Mount Vesuvius itself. One of the principal caldera is just outside of downtown Naples. The damned thing sleeps very lightly and WHEN it finally goes a good portion of the Mediterranean coast of Italy will go with it.

@AshaGrenetal Dangit. I got about halfway through a full parody of that one before I got to the part where the ghost riders/raptors are on the other side of the protagonist. I was heavily mocking migs and their pilots until that point, and then realized I'd need to change the positions around to show off how bad ass our raptors would be instead. Might still do that later, honestly. It's late here though, and I'm clearly tired.
