When I first beat the game I saw it as Aura is made from all the info gathered from users playing the game. She has experience everything before she can be born. The only thing she hasn’t experienced is death so in order for to be born she had to experience death. Which in turn would kill morganna. If the morganna got her she would have isolated Aura again and stopped her from existing. From what I remember Harold wasn’t even married to Emma or anything it was unrequited love. He was obsessed with her and her work. Would have great to explore Morgonna’s motivation more but after beating it I was really emotionaly happy with the ending. Would absolutely love a remake or a remaster to play on a current console

Great overview of all the games. I have to admit while Quarantine is a pretty epic conclusion to the series, but the game is probably the worst in the series terms of pacing and padding. That final dungeon is actually much easier at level 99, your level determines the rate at which you get infected, and the lower floors start throwing some more regular enemies at you to ease the challenge a bit, if I remember right. Still it's complete BS and why I haven't really cared to take it on since my 3rd or 4th time beating it. Though if you think that dungeon's bad do the 700+ item completion challenge that opens up after you beat the final boss. Those 4 hours you spent on the dungeon will mean nothing compared to the 20 to 40+ it takes to get all the items. That was a freaking nightmare and I will never ever attempt that again. To me Mia's death was kind of my Aerith Dies moment from my childhood, and I'll be honest the Another Birth light novels make this moment significantly more heart wrenching than the games. I would recommend anyone who likes the first four games to read Another Birth as it is arguably a better retelling of their story. I like the conclusion where you bring Mia back, but yeah she gets offed before G.U., BTW the G.U. Light Novel's depiction of this event is freaking brutal. She and Elk are very tragic characters, and I think they stick with me the most even as the series covered some equally tragic themes later on. I kind of agree that Harold isn't well developed, but I felt Morgana was pretty well developed in SIGN and a bit through Liminality, in my opinion. She's not the deepest villain, but the change from a manipulative mother like figure in SIGN to splitting herself up into the Phases showing her desperation to kill Aura in the games was good in my opinion. Though I did feel that the majority of the Phases didn't do much. Skeith, Macha and Corbenik were really the only plot relevant ones, everyone else was fodder, and Cubia seemed threatening at first, but kind of turned into a joke as the games went on, if you weren't severely underleveled in the last dungeon with him like I was the first time I played through these games. Also this is probably nothing, but CC2 are having a live stream playing through Vol.4 of Last Recode at the end of the month, December 31st. It's curious as to why they are doing this, though if I'm a betting man I'd guess they're going to announce something .hack related during this live stream. I'm hoping they eventually do remaster/remake the first 4 games since I like them a bit more than G.U., but understand why they passed them up if they don't.

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to do this retrospective. As someone who was only versed on the .Hack// franchise from the Legend of Twilight Anime, and from playing .Hack//G.U. Rebirth when I was younger. I always had a fascination and interest in Kite and his story. Now I finally got to know what he did that made him so legendary in the eyes of The World and CyberConnect 2. I also watched .Hack// Sign and found that to be one of the best anime i've seen in a very long time. Regarding Morganna's motives Yes she succumbed to a paradox realizing her only purpose was to oversee Aura's development. And yes, you could argue that Harald was callous in how he managed and handled it. But you pretty much lose any and all sympathy when you take advantage of an emotionally and mentally abused person and put people in comas just to keep yourself alive and relevant. She's like Beast from Over the Garden Wall - a manipulative fiend who cares only for its own self-preservation and is indifferent to the suffering of others. Much like Morganna with Tsukasa, Beast manipulated the Woodsman into cutting trees that used to be people, keeping his lantern lit, thus keeping himself alive.

I think that, for the "rare item dungeon" that both Black Rose and Ryoko invite you to, it's implied that, BlackRose actually has a crush on Kite because of everything that's happened in their adventures, and Ryoko has a crush on Kite because he actually tried to help her, as opposed to seeing her as dead weight and berating her for being terrible...although BlackRose is, ironically, trying to be professional here while Ryoko(who I believe is actually older than the two kids, but don't quote me on that) is trying to impress Kite and is the one trying to push the date narrative.

Thank you for this retrospective, when I was in high school I played through .hack 1 and 2 and was started a bit of the third game back never got to it and eventually my GameStop stop selling ps2 games which is said cause at the time they had the each .hack for 10 dollars. When I wanted to get back in due to seeing Kite in project x zone I then looked up the price for the third game and decided yeah guess that not happening. Around last year I got the sudden urge to listen to .hack music and stumbled upon your retrospective. It made me remember what engaged me about the games and made me even more engaged. After hearing and watching everything from your retrospective I really want to get into GU though I was a bit scared cause I know about Kite being a villain in that game. Kite being my favorite character in the franchise makes the idea of facing him a bit scary but still. I also didn’t noticed till now how these games really grow with you. While it’s understandable why they couldn’t fit all four games into 1 disc overall the game pretty much feel like a real mmo. Wonder if namco would ever make a real .hack mmo

Your ending thoughts there were almost verbatim what I'd thought before looking for a "Retrospective" or something similar. The themes were so intense, the atmosphere, the character and enemy designs. Aura and her family were the linchpin in making this series becoming something amazing. Going back and having my rose tinted glasses broke was rough, I kept seeing moments like "oooh that's cringey..." and "I don't remember some of these characters being so annoying... or the voice action, jeez." I remembered the high lights of it, the parts that made my pea brain think about where it could go. And then never finished it cus the games are expensive and I borrowed the first two from my cousin. But maybe that was a good thing, since I never got to find out how things don't really get tied together in a meaningful way. Made the series stand tall in the back of my head. But looking at it now... yeah, lots of missed potential. Definitely something to keep in mind for future developers.

These videos are amazing because I started with the G.U series back on PS2 then finished them and purchased Infection. But I literally never beat infection when I was younger because I was never able to beat skeith because I would only try to fight him instead of playing support. For that reason I never played the other three from the original 4 so now thanks to you I’ve been able to finally see that story unfold which pays off so much but in little ways in G.U. Like I am currently replaying G.U on recode and now just realized that Endrance is Elk! Like how he literally has a cat named Mia and his avatar was Macha! That just blew my mind and broke my heart simultaneously!

As someone who officially completed the last dungeon and one-shotting it (not intending to sound like I'm bragging), that dungeon was intense. I'm very glad that you can bring Helba with you, otherwise it would be impossible. I did have to date drain a _lot_ and I think as a result I actually lost some levels because of it. I have no idea how long it took me to finish the dungeon, but I do remember that I think I finished it around 5am or so, and got in trouble with my dad for still being up. Well, it wasn't like I could save halfway through the dungeon now, could I? Really enjoyed this retrospective because I've only played IMOQ once and when it first came out. I'm currently working on my second playthrough of G.U. because of Last Recode, but also because it's available on Steam and I can stream it easily. I love the .Hack// series and have a lot of the media, including a couple of t-shirts. I also agree with you on the .hack//twilight anime... it's the only thing that I didn't buy; not worth it. Moving right onto your G.U. retrospective!

Damn. my advice to use someone at the final dungeon did not bear you fruit. I'm sorry to hear you couldn't make it. That fight was pretty fun, and getting the reward felt awesome. But I believe I only ever completed it ONCE. Allow me to congratulate you on this nearly 14 month journey attempting to summarize this intense series of games. Mia was kind of a Checov's gun in the solo dungeon you had to go through. Remember what she told you. "In order for something to be born, something must break." This idea is one of the central themes of IMOQ. Literally, the events of Outbreak and the first half of Quarentine were because humanity was trying to bypass this rule. Once Kite accepts this statement as true, they look for what they need to break to achieve victory. Aura had to be born, and for that, something else had to die. In order for The World's golden age to arise, Morganna had to die. I am so excited to see where you go next. An analysis of some manga or anime may be fitting, since they are not always easy to get ahold of. But then there's always Last Recode, which, which easy to get ahold of, and is simpler, is still a beast to make it through. The internal lore of The World R2 is pretty fascinating. I just wish the followers were better written. Until the next time, thanks again for these videos, and I can't wait to see the next one.

thank you so much for this series! ive never been able to find the last 2 games to play myself and your guide was really fun and informative as a review without going on for too long ^_^ merci! also after rewatching .hack//sign i have to completely agree with your take on morganna v harold. rewatching the show and games its so clear shes a self aware creature who sees her death approaching and is just as terrified of dying as human would be, only unlike poor lycoris who realized she had no way to escape it morganna is using all the powers at her disposal to desperately try and hold it off. i would've loved to see this more developed in the series, and show how harold was really a heartless creator who's obsession with a woman who never loved him clouded his judgment and thats what corrupted him, not morganna herself who simply trapped him.

I had a chance to play .hack//Quarantine a while ago and... turns out that after data-draining the Guardian it turns into a bracelet on level 99, which heavily spams powerful elemental attacks, which is quite interesting looking at how data drain made them stronger instead of weakening them. They also gave 540 experience after defeating.

I know it's been 2 years, but I recently picked up on sale seeing hows it's been nearly 20 years since I touched this series these videos have been a great recap. I'd honestly forgotten how much these games were intertwined. G.U. has far more meaning when you know and understand the characters histories. Rewatching Roots was god damn torture, it's just one long exposition dump.

That 15 floor dungeon is almost revolved around 2 things in getting to the end of it without praying to RNGesus. Plotting out the shortest path possible aka no exploration at all and being at max level. Tho the max level thing is significantly easier if you played the games when they first released simply cause you probably capped out your levels between games which ultimately makes capping out in Quarantine a bit less time consuming, but capping out does affect the infection rate cause it scales based on level difference. If you underleveled and manage to pull a drain, you'll take more infection compared to something you're equal to or overleveled against. But yea, its almost as if that 15 floor dungeon was designed with being max level and optimal path in mind cause everyone that I know thats done it with the least amount of headache did exactly those 2 things and usually came out 2-4 levels lower than when they went in. It rides that game over line pretty close, but not deviating from the path usually means you'll get down to the bottom. So ironically, Helba actually ends up being a trap pick for that dungeon simply cause she allows you to get away with being lower level than you should be.

Slight note on Harold. In the original japanese (awesome you can toggle it in the menu of the English) his voice is far better, without all the inflection the English actor puts into it. I think the English actor was trying to replicate the Japanese’s robotic and somewhat sing songy intonation, but it just doesn’t come off very well. To be honest I’d recommend japanese as the superior voice option for IMOQ.

These were a fantastic look back into the original four games and I am very interested to hear what you're going to talk about once GU hits the table especially since I think part three outbreak you mentioned a character that had a much better character arc then a character from GU. I knew about the series thanks to dot hack part one infection along with dot hack sign when I was a little kid but I couldn't get part one two or three so I got part four quarantine. Alittle late to the game, but just found this video series. I grew up a MASSIVE fan of the .HACK franchise and, though I can openly admit that the series has some major flaws, I enjoyed it immensely and it holds a special place in my heart among many long years of gaming. Thanks for making these and letting me travel threw my nostalgia agein without the pain of having to replay a game that, quite frankly, doesnt remotely hold up over time. I remember spending a few hundred hours playing the IMOQ quadrilogy, and enjoying finding new things, secrets, lore, desktop features, and even completing the Ryu Books of 1000. You did a fascinating job retelling the game as accuratly as needed, and that is what I was looking for. Moving on to the GU retrospective videos now with Shinta Reviews! Ps: Mistal best IMOQ girl, Alkaid best GU girl, fite me. Lol

Nevermind. I tried watching Shintas videos and, while detailed and informative, seemed obnoxious, elitist, and just loud in general. I much preferred your format and tone and Ill look forward to seeing more from you if you decide to continue.

Thank for these videos. I just couldn't grind anymore virus cores after the 7th phase so i never finished the game (and i replayed this 3 or 4 times, Quarantine is BS ). I have recently bought GU and I wanted to remember the previous games.
