No idea why so many SMB hacks change like three notes of the music. Like... Dude, either change the music or don't. This in-between stuff just sounds weird.

Yeah, but for this one it actually makes sense. Being designed as a possible 'proto/early' version of SMB, to feature various elements that are eerily similar to the final product but still different and unrefined, is largely the point of the theme. This includes the music... I think they nailed it.

As the creator of this hack, the music changes were to add a "prototype feel" to the game. Some of the changes to the Starman and Ground theme were directly inspired by the original tracks Koji Kondo used as inspiration
