Hacking Hidden Games In A Handheld Arcade

So instead of wiring up switches and cutting holes into the shell. You can actually wire them up to the controller buttons themselves! I have my Defender Arcade machine set to where I can hold up to have it play Pacman. Hold down for Ms Pacman. Hold Left for Galaxian. Hold Right for Defender. It keeps the shell looking great and you dont even have to cut shells or anything. Its a great way to do it hidden

Good eye! I use that trick on my Arcade games to give me credits when I push the p2 start button. It didn't occur to me to try it with this handheld. I was thinking he'd use jumpers or something.

@@HackerBilly13 i wonder if the code on these things has been patched to prevent that mod. if i hold down any button while powering it on, the game will not power on until after i release the button. that's stock behavior. i connected the game selection pads to the buttons and tried it anyways, but it always boots to the game that's selected when no resistors are present. i'm not sure this mod will work with the micro arcade i have.

@@Ruthsarian It should work the same way the switches do? Thats odd. I wired each button to the corresponding resistor area. Just like the 4 switches except to each of the directional pads. Granted I do have one of the first ones

ordered one of these, plan to test mercury switches in it, if tilt it in different directions before powering on will select different games , update wen i try this out , waiting for it to come

I have one of the small card Tetris games, as well as the mini cabinet one like the ones you have here. The card one is dated to 2019 on the battery, and the cabinet says 2018 on it. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to get any other games working on it by bridging the contacts on either of the consoles. Both of them don't have any 0 ohm resistors in place either. Do you know when yours were made? I wonder if they fixed this particular issue around this time. I tried the multiple position trick as well, but didn't have any luck with that, but it could be because of not bridging them right.

Great video! I have a few of the keychains that I use as ornaments. Is there room to mount the selector dip switches elsewhere? I'd want them to be less noticeable, if I decide to mod mine. I started looking at the micro arcades on amazon during the video, and sure enough, there's several versions, and Q-bert is one of them. I might grab a few to mod and hand to my kids on trips. I do wish q-bert had its dpad rotated 45 degrees, though.

i recall the sides of the body had the most space available to fit a 4-position dip switch. maybe using individual switches could let you place them in more discrete locations.

Very intersting discovery. Not sure if youve heard, however, ive been told that on the new verson of the totes/launch talkimg pedometer, there is a certain pin on the PCB, which, when shorted, reveals a hidden pace melody mode glitch/easter egg, and was curious, if one day you could by chance get one to investigate, as Id be interested to discover if the melodies are the same 7 from the older units from the early 00s, or a different set. If you cant i understand, but hopefully one day someone on KZbin could. Thanks.

I just got the Oregon trail micro arcade the picture on the box shows the for pads with no resistor but the actual device I got the pads aren't there there are some pads underneath the a button but they don't seem to do anything when I jump them. Any help?

What if you try multiple combinations of shorted pads? With 4 pad positions, there are 16 possible combinations of shorted or open connections. It's possible that the pad positions are connected to address lines for the memory and may map to more games.

if any more than one connection is made at a time the game just displays a blank screen. i had tested that, but left it out of the video.

i kept the stock piezo speaker. a larger speaker wouldn't fit inside the case and it gets in the way of where you position your fingers if you mount one on the outside.

Wonderful video!! I bought a tetris micro arcade to do the mod and I bought the Pacman micro arcade (same model as the tetris) but for I see on the Pacman game doesn't have any resistor, does anybody knows if it has another games? I tried to make some connections as your video but not lucky :/

just so happens that i picked up a pac man micro arcade a couple months back to hack as well. pac man has 4 games on it, not two. to select different games you have to connect two pairs of pads, not one pair. with no pads connected you get pac man. the hack is a little more complicated with the pac man mini arcade, but it is possible. i ended up using a 4 position dip switch (www.amazon.com/dp/B07LBMC9HV/) glued to the back and ran some thin, enameled wire from those pads to the dip switches.

@@MikeXfm I just grabbed a Tetris micro arcade as a prize from Dave and Busters last week…unfortunately it only has a single resistor in the area where these pads normally are so it looks like they’ve revised the boards. Part of me wonders if the traces are still under there but I’m not about to destroy my Tetris to find out. Edit: just realized the resistor is in a different place entirely, directly below the bottom right leg of the power switch.

Just opened the space invader one. It has pac man, ms pac man, galaxians and space invaders. I put a switch on so I could switch between space invaders and Galaxians but the sound is now really quiet. Anyone know how to resolve this?

sounds like there will be two copies of each game. one with sounds designed for the type of speaker in your device and one with sounds designed for a different type of speaker. you've found the version designed for the other speaker. keep playing with the switch settings and you should find one with sounds that work with the speaker you have
